This is what I use and it works pretty well.
It doesn’t matter. This thing is so far from what I want out of VR long-term that it’s only a temporary amusement that I will eventually give to my kids. I’m having a lot of fun with it for now.
You use the leather one or the silicone one?

Ooh, I didn’t know there was a leather one. I use the silicon one. It repels sweat just fine. I mean I have to put a towel on the floor when I play beat saber, but the Quest itself stays dry and doesn’t fog up.
Ars has a really solid follow-up piece today on the risks (to us) of what Facebook is likely to do to with Oculus now : https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/08/why-the-facebookening-of-oculus-vr-is-bad-for-users-devs-competition/

Yeah, that’s the whole problem with Facebook accounts. It’s a social media platform first and foremost, unlike Google, which is a broad-based platform that kind of undergirds the whole internet. Facebook’s social media function has nothing to do with VR. It’s like requiring me to create a Subway account in order to use my bank’s online services.
Much as I love my Quest, I won’t be buying another Oculus offering unless they remove this requirement.

When Facebook bought Occulus I assumed they would eventually be rolling out VR video meets, ie, allowing you to somehow scan your likeness and recreate a CG version of yourself, mapping your face and whatnot and then being able to meet your Facebook friends in whatever styled room you wanted (bottom of volcano, underwater, etc) for a video chat. Or something like that, I don’t know, something that related to actually integrating the technology into their platform. Maybe this is just the first step, otherwise why bother harassing the customers.
It doesn’t bother me as long as it doesn’t post anything to my Facebook feed automatically.
You won’t be annoyed by Facebook pushing ads into your face or taking information about what you do, integrating that into the profile info they already have for you, and then using / advertising / selling against that? I sure would personally.
Yes that’s where they’ve always been heading, but the tech isn’t there yet.
Have you missed all those videos posted showing the awesome avatar facial animation stuff they’ve been working on? The most recent one was posted here six days ago.
Those were the first step. :)
They bought Oculus to make VR part of their social media function, not just to make games. Remember the press releases at the time:
Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.
We believe virtual reality will be heavily defined by social experiences that connect people in magical, new ways.
Immersive gaming will be the first
But this is just the start. After games, we’re going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home.
This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.
Oh yeah, displaying ads while I’m on the VR home screen would be annoying as hell. If there’s any sanity left to the world, they’d reserve that for subsidized versions like Amazon does with the Kindle. I guess we’ll see.
Cirque du Soleil VR is
Highly recommended for that price. It’s around 60 minutes of high quality VR experience, but in practical terms because some of the videos have stuff all around you, they have to be watched twice so experience everything.
/search on Google
…oh look, it’s a Facebook exclusive! lol
Well yes, when you make up stuff is easy to make any company or person bad, I guess.
Not really? Lots of companies already do that, and I’m pretty indifferent to it. Sometimes I wonder what effect it has on ads, but I have been using ad blockers for more than a decade so it’s an unknown to me. Maybe they are super personalized to me?
OK if you agree to the onerous terms of service.

So I really like the idea of a self contained VR system but I really don’t like Facebook. Are there any announcements or rumors of a viable quest competitor?
I haven’t heard any, beyond the vague old rumours of some kind of Apple headset.
Well, my GearVR still gets occasional use, not that I would consider it a ‘Quest competitor’; it’s fine for what it does: I like to wow myself in Vendetta, freak out in Dreadhalls or chill out in Altspace. Minecraft can also be very Zen. Wands is a great magical duel simulator.
There are um, videos that are also nice, especially being separated from a loved one for 18 months (I mean fighter jet ride alongs, of course).
It’s more or less dead in the water as a platform and there was some nebulousity between Samsung and Facebook while it was active. The apps still work fine, though.
The Neon Jungle (Quill short) was awesome! It was like a gummy bear-fueled drug trip.
I expect an incoming FB acquisition of Studio Syro, lol.
The Room VR A Dark Matter is now in Viveport
Isn’t it basically an Oculus though? i.e Facebook? Developed in collaboration and uses their store? ;)
