Sidequest has been updated, now it includes a fool-proof button to enable 90hz

I forgot to comment it but I think the sound of the Q2 is a bit better than Q1’s? It could be just because it’s closer to the ear and tries less to ‘bounce’ the sound on the strap.

I also had the ‘pleasure’ to see Link work as well as always. I connect it, and the very first thing I have is a loud static sound on the left ear. Just like I had sometimes with the Quest 1. Disconnected, connected through VD, everything is perfect.

What does it actually do? Enable 90Hz in all apps? In all side-loaded apps? Only in specific side-loaded apps that target it?

I know when I installed Virtual Desktop it defaulted to streaming video at 90Hz, which was weird given the HMD was still at 72…

I used Quest 2 for a good few hours. Much nicer display. More washed out and glarey of course but way sharper and clearer. The headset is smaller and lighter and more portable but the strap digs into my ears (Elite strap is a must).

Some games seemed to support the higher resolution out of the box - In Death Unchained for example looked much sharper while running just as well.

Sairento Untethered was quite low res though - I guess it runs at a lower fixed internal res, probably due to the performance issues it tends to have. It did seem to run better than before at least.

I also wandered around for a while in Wander, and the clearer images made it a much nicer experience.

I like how chunky the controllers are, but yeah they do feel a bit unergonomic to hold. Like the shape doesn’t sit that well in the hand, and holding the grips down is a bit of a strain. They don’t feel as nice as I remember the old Rift controllers feeling. Maybe my hands are just super used to Quest 1 and Rift S.

Also no more magnetic battery hatch! I loved how that felt but I guess this way at least the hatch isn’t sliding off during Beat Saber any more…

Got my Q2. Updated and linked with no issues. Even with the basic strap it’s more comfy for sure for me than the Q1. Clearer and sharper for sure.

I played Beat Saber twice and just don’t like the controllers at all. I thought I would as my hands are larger and so no problem. Then I looked at my Q1 controllers and realized there is a grippy texture which is missing in the Q2 grips. Will have to add some to those as I had to grip them tighter then I would like to hold onto them and that will get old. I do like the solid battery connection though.

So will try some other games tonight. So far so good.

Question! I’ve had no luck getting Oculus games to play wirelessly on Quest via Virtual Desktop. I thought it was meant to work these days, without needing Revive?

I have tried launching via the ‘Games’ section of Virtual Desktop as they advise.

What am I missing?

Why would you need Revive to play Oculus games on a Quest? that was never needed.

Not sure what you are missing, to be honest. It works for me. Does it work with Link?

Wirelessly with Virtual Desktop, Quest was basically seen as a SteamVR device in the past so you used to need Revive to play your Oculus games. It wasn’t that long ago and I am not dreaming it! :)

It always detected Oculus games for me… then again I only tried VD in the last half a year.

So, a question for you lucky Quest 2 owners (Or others who knows, of course) - Is this a good headset to play games like No Mans Sky, Star Wars Squadrons, skyrim Vr, Elite Dangerous and the like on? And do they work out of the box, or do you need other stuff?

I am seriously considering the HP Reverb G2, but its a lot more expensive, and seems to be sold out as well, so was considering starting with this one . Thanks!

Oculus games should work on Virtual Desktop. Not all of them, but most. I just tested the old Dreamdeck app wirelessly. I never installed revive.

Did you patch VR desktop in SideQuest and install Rift software? It definitely changed on me between the first time I tried it and the last.

Can I play SteamVR or Oculus Rift games?
Yes but you need a VR ready PC running Windows 10 (it won’t work on a Mac). You need to patch Virtual Desktop after purchasing the app in the Oculus Store. This can be done easily by using SideQuest. Follow the instructions in SideQuest to enable developer mode then click “Install to Headset” in the Virtual Desktop page in SideQuest.

Once you have sideloaded it, you need to launch your games from the Virtual Desktop Games tab in VR. You also need the Oculus Rift Software installed.

It’s a great all-around headset. Can’t beat it for the price.

Out of the box it works for all those games as long as you have a USB cable that’s long enough. If you’re willing to do a little extra work playing PC VR wirelessly on virtual desktop is even better. If you have a newish router and not too much other wireless activity around you, you might not need to buy anything else for me it.

Yeah I have done all that. Steam games work wirelessly. Anyway, I think I know what it might be - I also have a Rift S plugged into the PC lol. :D

If you’re only ever going to play seated games like those, you’d be better off with a G2 (though none of us have actually used one yet). :)

But the freedom of wireless is pretty cool too, and Quest is fairly cheap. You can always get a dedicated desktop unit later I suppose.

Thanks guys - I am slightly worried that after an initial honeymoon period, I will never use it again, or I get dizzy using it perhaps, so was thinking a slightly cheaper one (The difference in price is around two times higher for G2 here in Denmark) would make more sense, economically :-)

oh - another question - I hear audio is audible for everyone in the room? Is the screen on a PC also viewable by others? I have my master gaming Pc in the living room, and wouldn’t mind if my GF could see what I was seeing, while gaming, making it a slightly more shared experience.

The built in headphones are audible for the room, somewhat, but you can plug in any headphones you want too.

The screen on the PC doesn’t show, but I think there’s an option to show it if you want to.

Can confirm. I think if you’re using VD, you still need Revive to play Oculus games. The only way to get to the Oculus Home location is if you’re using the link cable… unless that’s changed in the last couple of months.

Again, you can play Oculus games directly. Not sure when it was implemented.
edit: it seems it was on February

So, I purchased an Occulus Quest 2 as well! Yay! I will get it this monday, so - WHAT GAMES DO I NEED?! I like long walks on the beach, pina coladas and soft music…eh…well, I mean, Skyrim and other fun stuff!

Oh - and how hard do you have to swing the controllers? Is it Wii style? Due to surgery I may have to wait a bit then if its like the Wii, but if its just like using a controller, I should be fine :-)

I am somewhat excited :-D

Depends entirely on the game. It’s one to one movement, so if the game calls for a hard swing, you have to swing hard. If it doesn’t, you don’t. Beat Saber gives you more points for a hard swing, for instance, but you can still get through the levels with just a wrist flick. I don’t really play any other games that involve much swinging (well, Asgard’s Wrath I suppose). It’s much more about pointing and grabbing.

You can be pretty subtle or wild with the controllers on the Quest 1. Haven’t tried the Quest 2 ones though.

App Suggestions on the Quest:

  • Virtual Desktop
  • BeatSaber (get it from Oculus store for Quest and your DLC is cross-buy with Oculus PC version)
  • Job Simulator
  • Tetris Effect
  • Gun Club VR (Cross-buy)
