Yeah, Pistol Whip is up there with Super Hot and Beat Saber and providing a pretty decent workout, and it’s just damn fun. Also extremely well-supported over the last year with a ton of free content.

Yes, PW is my go to for good quick fun…I like it a bit more than Beat Saber and I like to challenge my kid to PW high scores.

I was able to land a Quest 2, but it won’t get here until Jan 4th-Jan 10th. Still, it feels good to get the order in. Who knows, sometimes Amazon surprises me and they ship things earlier than they say.
So to play PC VR games, it’s best to have the headset wired, right? I bought an Anker cable that is supposed to work, do I also need a 90 degree adapter since the real Oculous Link cable has a 90 connector?
I also saw that you can do PC VR with Virtual Desktop. Is that easy to get working?
If you’re going to be seated at your PC then wired is easiest. If you want to move around though - wireless is always better!
You don’t need a right angle cable or adapter. It’s just helpful to keep the cable out of your way.
Virtual Desktop is pretty easy, but if you want to play Steam games there are some hoops to jump through to get it setup. You have to sideload a different Virtual Desktop app onto the headset. Feel free to post if you have questions about the process!
The nice thing is once you’ve gone through that hassle you can sideload anything else. There are some pretty good games available via sideloading, including classics such as Half-Life 1 and Quake.
Grats! I guess for seated PC games it would be best yeah. Any PC games that play better standing would be better with a wireless link I reckon, even if there’s a small latency or quality loss. Unsure if there have been any proper comparisons between Link and Virtual Desktop.
You don’t need a 90 degree connector. It just makes the thing sleeker:
It is certainly not plug and play. :)
Not hard, but a bunch of steps:
- buy/install VD
- sign up for developer mode with Oculus
- install some PC drivers
- install SideQuest
- update VD using SideQuest
- install VD streamer app on PC.
Ideally PC wired to a Wifi 6 router. Then play with streaming settings for optimal connection…

I really, really did not like the process of getting Virtual Desktop and Sideload to work. I had to look all over for how to do it, and redo steps that didn’t work for mysterious reasons. In a world (In a world…!) where we are used to plug’n play just working, this was frustrating.
It still doesn’t work all the time shrugs.
So what are the non-game must-have VR apps? I’m guessing Google earth, because it’s free, but hat else? Should I pick up virtual desktop, even if I don’t get a quest?
I’ll give you a use case scenario. When I play MSFS I use a second screen for things like the mobile companion app, flight charts, navsim, whatever economy sim I’m using, etc. is there an app I could use to turn on external screens and then turn them off again?
That’s built into Oculus and I believe WMR. You can pin a window anywhere in your 3d view, or just bring it up with a press of a button.

This has probably been talked about before but this thread is pretty long. I won’t be able to spend a lot of VR games. but want just enough to experience some cool stuff. GamesBillet has Skyrim VR on sale for $15 so I grabbed that. I already have some racing games, like Dirt Rally 2.
I plan on getting Beat Saber. Should I get it from the Oculus store or Steam? Does the Oculus store ever have sales?
What other must haves are there provide a great VR experience? I’m not into flight sims and don’t like games like Descent.
Thanks!
Beat Saber DLC purchased from the Oculus store is cross-buy for the Pc and Quest versions of Beat Saber. The game itself is not cross-buy however. Oculus does have sales, but Beat Saber is almost never discounted.
Pistol Whip is a shooting gallery game set to music. John Wick meets Beat Saber.
My family love Gun Club VR. It has escalating challenges in static and dynamic target ranges. Copious upgrades to get as you play.
Job Simulator has had surprising longevity here.

Ooops the sale was just on music, not the game. If I’m unsure I want to set up the wireless PC VR, buying it from Oculus would make it easier to jump in and play I guess.

Half-Life: Alyx doesn’t list the Quest or Quest 2 in the supported hardware section. Does this mean it wouldn’t work for the Quest 2?

It does work for Quest 2, if you use the cable. Or rather, LINK, as they call it.
Virtual Desktop also works with the Quest wirelessly with Alyx.

@robc04, having moved from the Rift S to the HP Reverb G2, I would suggest NEVER buying the PC version of a VR game from the Oculus Store unless you’re buying the Quest version of a game or a cross-buy, always go Steam so you can change hardware in the future. (Revive works great for running Rift stuff on other headsets now, but who knows if that will be true forever?)
Also, if you have a joystick, you can get 3 months of Game Pass Ultimate for $1 right now, so that’s three months of VR MS Flight Simulator for $1. :-)

Are you on a Quest? There are a bunch of free experiences on there. Echo VR is like zero G full-contact ultimate frisbee and it’s free on there. The Quill theater has a bunch of… well they’re kind of like stories, but animated in VR. Some are really good: try Tales From Soda Island: The Multiverse Bakery.
The Firefox Reality browser has some good apps and games you can view right from the browser, all for free.
Bait is a free fishing game and Bogo is a free virtual pet. And there are a bunch of free apps/experiences, like Travelling While Black, Mission: ISS, etc.

Noted!
A Quest 2, once it arrives in a couple weeks. Thanks for the suggestions. It seems like Google Earth would be cool too.

Google Earth is amazing. Not available for Quest though, unless you go through the link cable or virtual desktop. But free if you do, and it’s not very resource intensive so can actually run ok on an older PC.

I second Google Earth. It’s an amazing experience.
Any recommendations of viewing 360 youtube videos via link? My wireless connection doesn’t handle it well.
