Streaming VR video on the desktop is a mess for sure. There is Firefox Reality on Oculus Quest, which is easily the best of any of the apps / browsers I’ve tried. Supposedly it is coming to SteamVR, but the last update on that was mid-2019 so I’m not holding my breath. There is a Viveport version, but it’s missing several features from the Quest version.

Why is Firefox Reality good? It lacks some of the media control features such as skipping ahead via the controllers, but it has bookmarks, password fill, and sync with the desktop Firefox. That makes it much more usable.

I tried DeoVR via Oculus for PC. I could never get it to go into 180 degree playback - it would just show the videos in a window. Play’a only works with some sites and I had regular problems entering login information with it.

It seems like this should really be a solved problem at this point.

I don’t do a lot of VR video, but doesn’t Virtual Desktop give you a bunch of options for that?

My solution was just to use the third Displayport connection on my video card. I haven’t had any issues since. I have no idea why it doesn’t work with the others since they’re all the same spec. I’m using the motherboard’s rear USB-C as well.

Are you sure the cable is seated all the way on the headset itself? There is a pinhole on the side of the cable that should just butt up against the set when fully attached.

If that’s not the issue, try switching connections for your regular monitor if you’re able to. I’ve read that this might be a possible solution.

I have everything working now and I’ve played around with it a bit (mostly Dirt Rally 2). I am liking it a lot. I didn’t think I was terrible at this game but I’m noticing an immediate improvement on stage times in VR. I just find it a lot easier to nail the apexes and judge distance.

Alyx is on sale for $45 so I bought that and I’m downloading it now.

I’ve tried all the ports (and all the USB ports for that matter), though I only have two, which as far I know should both be the right spec as it’s a 3080. The minidisplayport on my laptop doesn’t work either. I have definitely pushed it all the way in on the headset. I don’t think my regular monitor has anything other than Displayport, as it’s G-sync and needs it to work properly.

Yes, but none of them apply to web streamed video in this case.

Wow, so this certainly isn’t plug and play. I’m on the line with HP support right now - I’m guessing they are going to have to replace my controller. Which is a bummer, but at least I can play truck simulator and MSFS. Hopefully. I’ve tried the former, and it certainly is cool. I have not yet tried the lattter.

I’m guessing Alyx will require the VR controllers, so that will probably have to sit on the shelf. On the other hand, I’m hoping that Star Wars Squadrons will be playable with a regular old XBox ONe controller.

I keep running into issues with Windows Mixed Reality and Steam VR. I wish they played nicer together. WMR in particular seems overly busy. I’d much prefer a simpler cleaner interface than the fake mansion.

I played a little bit of ATS. It was very cool, and I got a little bit of vertigo. The graphics are not as crisp as on a monitor, but I guess that is to be expected.

Things are noticeably blurry a few degrees out from my center of vision, Is that the “sweet spot” I hear everyone talking about? Also, how do I optimize the IPD setting?

Update: HP is going to replace the controller. Unfortunately, they don’t anticipate having any until March. I wonder if it would be easier/quicker to buy a new headset and return this one.

I have a real basic question: What should I be launching to play Steam VR games? SHould I launch directly from the icon on my desktop, through Steam VR app (doesn’t really work for games like ATS that aren’t “officially” supported), or Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR app?

I can’t get Steam VR to work with my XBox One controller. Am I missing something? As I mentioned upthread, one of my G2 controllers doesn’t work, so I’m looking for a workaround.

Games should work with the Xbox One controller independently of them using normal Steam or SteamVR. The interaction with the controller doesn’t have anything to do with VR.

Or are you trying to use it as a VR controller??

For Oculus I just launch the game in Steam and put on the headset. I don’t touch the SteamVR app.

I am trying to.use it to navigate the space in the steam vr “room.” It’s not a big deal if it works in-game. So far it does in ATS. I’ll try MSFS later today. The one controller that works should be good enough to work the in-cockpit doodads.

Motion controllers do not work in MSFS at present. You have to use a joystick, yoke, XBox controller, etc. You might be able to get KBM to work if you can feel the keyboard controls.

MSFS doesn’t use VR controllers.

WE’LL PROBLEM SOLVED THEN.

Whatever suits the situation I guess, I don’t think it really matters.

I have the icons for things I play floating in Home, so I just put the headset on and click one to launch it.

For Oculus I add Steam games to the Oculus launcher using Oculus Tray Tool. Then I run them from there.

Interesting. I just re-bought Beat Saber for PC VR, but I might need to look into Synth Riders now. Thanks for the tip.

I know I’m kinda late to the party, but Half-Life Alyx is absolutely amazing on the Reverb G2. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Oculus store sale. From what I’ve read, should last through the 27th.

Walkabout Mini Gold and Eleven Table Tennis are easy buys.
