Take your time with this one. It’s pretty much the only AAA-level VR experience out there.
I was looking for a couple more multiplayer VR games for my sons and I to play. Found these lists helpful.
I played a little bit of Star Wars Squadrons yesterday. Very cool.
Otherwise still monkeying with MSFS settings (as further described in the appropriate thread).
I’m finding that I’m not liking ATS in VR as much as I thought I would. It’s sort of a neat trick, but I may go back to dwlivering gifts in pancake mode.
I cant play ATS in anything but VR now.
I’m finding the resolution too low, the anti-aliasing too poor, and everything outside of the sweet spot to be too much of a smear. Is it possible that my settings are not set up correctly, or have you just gotten used to it?
It’s also moderately annoying that you have to take off the headset to use the menus. I’m hoping that I can get around that with OVR toolkit, but I haven’t messed with it too much.
As far as the resolution and aliasing are concerned, your settings are certainly incorrect, because it ought to be razor sharp with very little aliasing on a G2.
ATS is a tad janky, but once I had it set up properly menus worked with the headset on.
The sweet spot issue kinda confuses me, because it shouldn’t be any better or worse then any other game you’ve tried, unless it’s just becoming a larger issue because of the aforementioned resolution / aliasing problem.
I will say that considering how many years VR has been a thing, it’s kind of sad that basic things aren’t explained to new users, like turning off theater mode in SteamVR for games without “official” VR support to work properly.
And for all the flack I’ve seen WMR get, my experience so far has been more pleasant with that than SteamVR, which has been at times unintuitive, and straight up buggy. I had an issue where even outside of games, with the headset off, the SteamVR processes were eating up 9 gigabytes of RAM and 100% GPU. I had to reboot to solve it, but who knows if that will happen again.
Last night I installed Project Cars (the original), but I simply can’t get decent performance in VR, regardless of settings. Frame rate seems well below 90, and it is extremely jittery. So something there seems seriously messed up, because that ought to run flawless, but I feel like I’ve tried every combination of settings to no avail.
Penny, how do you have ATS set up? I tried looking at a YouTube video but it may have been pretty old and out of date. Does the in-game resolution do anything?
The in-game resolution doesn’t do anything. It should render at whatever resolution SteamVR’s display settings are set to.
Anyway, starting from the top. Right click on ATS in Steam and go to Properties > Beta. Opt-in to the latest Oculus beta. Then under the General tab put -openvr in the Launch Options. And make sure you have theater mode turned off for it to even run in VR.
In the SteamVR video settings I just have it set to 100% custom resolution (3160x3088).
In-game settings are set to Ultra, and then in advanced I have scaling set to 100% and AA and DOF disabled.
A couple tips. F11 switches the menus from your monitor to your headset. I have at times experienced janky menus in the headset when adjusting video settings, so you may want to keep them on the monitor at least until you’re done tweaking that.
F12 re-centers your camera to your headset orientation. So if things are way out of whack, press that when you’re positioned in front of your steering wheel while looking straight ahead.

@Editer or anyone. I’m finally trying to get setup and was wondering if anyone could write-up a short guide on how to get up and running with some of the tweaks or nuances we have to do to get titles running properly, and how to do Oculus stuff with this?
Like someone on Reddit said the first VR thing you should do is run Oculus First Contact for the wow
factor.
Is there a power button or something on the VR headset? It’s not showing up on my computer :(
If you’re a Q2 user, comb the thread. I’ve gone over a ton of my own struggles and findings regarding Link, the setup tool, wtc.

Is there supposed to be a USB-C to A adapter in the HP Reverb 2 box? I’m not finding one.

And yes, there should be one. It looks like a thumb drive.

Real nice of them to not give me one. Geez. Can’t find any store around here that carries one in stock either. Makes me mad as my nieces were coming over today to try it out with me. Planned the whole day around it.

Oh boy, you got one of those? You are in for one HELL of a ride. The thing is great, but it’s a very PC bit of hardware. Demanding in every sense of the word.
I improved the tracking from my simpit by stringing some christmas lights around it. Much better now. Haven’t gotten Google Earth to work. But Il-2 is marvellous, as are DCS and MSFS2020 (though that one took a fair bit of tweaking to get right!)

It’s supposed to be in a little plastic bag along with all the other cables in the black box. You can see it starting at 1:10 in this video:
Thanks Penny. That helped a ton.

Not in the box :(
Thanks though.

Bummer on the adapter. :-( Do you have an Apple Store around? They’d have them.
I am just immensely frustrated and disappointed in Project Cars. I have spent hours tweaking every setting known to man and Googling solutions and it just runs like unplayable, jittery dog shit. It looks amazing, and there are brief, slight hints of smoothness every few seconds which prove that it could be an awesome VR experience, but instead it’s just pure garbage.
I’ve played all three of the Project Cars games in VR (on the Rift) and didn’t have the issues you are describing. They are demanding, but all run pretty smoothly once the settings are dialed down a bit. Still occasional reprojection in large packs of cars and heavy weather but perfectly playable for the most part. I haven’t tried with my G2 yet though.
Have you reduced the number of cars on the grid? That’s a big one for performance I found. And I guess it could be your resolution/supersampling, did you try cranking it down to half or something?
*edit: played some PC3 on the G2, I set the SteamVR res for the game to 50% and it runs pretty well.
