VR - Is it really going to be a success? Or, thanks Time for starting a discussion!

I don’t know why, but there are not one or two, but three different ‘3d puzzle’ games

I love Puzzling Places.

Easily lost 3-4 hours into that already.

Wow, Oculus support just got back to me. ONE WEEK after I put in the ticket. Gods forbid I ever need actual support.

So decided last night that Elite Dangerous in VR is functionally useless. While pretty, it adds nothing to the game play. So taking that off the VR list, but I’ll still jump in 2d and play it occasionally.

No Man’s Sky however, is pretty darn cool in VR. The game controls are updated for being in VR and give you some interesting ways to control things to keep you in the game and feeling like your immersed.

If you haven’t given it a try, It’s a winner.

Really? I haven’t tried it yet, but I thought Elite was a premier VR game that really blew people away. Did you find it too hard to play in VR?

Some people expect their games to lead them around, through a theme park or story. Elite don’t do that. It’s a collection of pretty bits with some game mechanics here and there. Me, I <3 it a lot. But not to the tune of putting tens of hours in every week. Some others hate it for not being what they’d like it to be.

What do you think they want it to be (instead of what it is)?

As initially promised, a single-player, highly-moddable update more in the mold of Elite 2 rather than the pointless multiplayer grindfest and minimally-viable features that we have now.

But Frontier did do VR right. Sailing into a station the first few times gave me VR chubbies.

I also bought Elite specifically to play in VR. I did the tutorial, a few jumps, decided that although it looked amazing, I just wasn’t into it as a game. It’s not 1983 any more. So I got a refund. I think those who were into the game in 2D will probably love it in VR. As for me, VR made it harder to learn all the controls, and it was just too complex for the amount of fun.

Ironically, Flight Simulator on the other hand is way more complex but somehow infinitely more satisfying in VR. I find it hard to fly pancake now.

Not a lot of things to look at in space, and certainly not all that familiar.

Quite so. Seen one sun, seen them all :D

I think Elite appeals to the kind of people who like Microsoft Flight Simulator – learning the systems and exploring is the game. But you gotta like space stuff more than trees and buildings.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy space trucking and exploring in Elite a lot. Haven’t even touched the Engineer grind fest yet.

However, IN VR, Elite adds nothing. It’s a head tracking mechanic with some visual improvements.

As I said see the difference between No Mans Sky vs Elite. In elite, I can’t even use my hand tracking. I’m sitting in a chair, with a virtual joysick that moves back and forth if I move back and forth.

No Man Sky literally has you reaching up to turn on your visor to scan, opening the cockpit to get out. Superman hands to jet pack. It’s immersive as heck.

I’ll still play Elite, I’ll just do it in 2D with my browser to Eddb open for trading.

A head tracking mechanic in a cockpit sim is not exactly nothing. TrackIR was invented for a reason.

I hadn’t played NMS in 8 months (but had played a TON before that). When I tried it in VR I was so confused at how to make anything work I just quit. Maybe some day when I have a lot of patience I’ll give it another go. The flight controls in particular were awful to me. But maybe you get better?

Not for the cost of a VR system. I was hoping for a bit more. Even Star Trek Bridge Commander let’s me push buttons with my hands.

This was what helped me acclimate to the new system.

You should start a new game so you get the control tutorial. You do get better, and it’s awesome. :)

The flight controls though can be a pain and take some extra getting used to. They work best when you realise your hands don’t need to align to the cockpit controls, and you can rest your stick hand on your leg and pivot it from there.

Wonderful advice. Thanks!

I mean, sure, if you’re only buying it for Elite, it’ll be a waste of money. But I can’t imagine playing Elite without VR these days. some games are better suited for touch controls than others, and at least for me I much prefer not to have touch controls in a cockpit sim. Maybe one day when we have perfect hand tracking, but not for now. HOTASes have actual physical buttons you can press with your hands.
