That sucks. :(
Could it indicate an issue somewhere on your end, if you are getting the same behaviour with a brand new unit?

Is it a full brand new set, or did they “refurbish” yours? If it’s brand new… I might wonder if there’s something wrong with your motherboard?

The G2 comes in two parts; the HMD itself and a data cable/power assembly. I guess that part us faulty but that didn’t get replaced.
I wish I had a second computer at hand to run tests on.

Want to come to Michigan? :)
I assumed that was asking whether you wanted to share media files, I’ve seen a couple of social media apps (Bigscreen for example) require access if you want to stream content from your connected PC. The need to deny that isn’t clear, but I’ll try it.
@jpinard is correct insofar as I wondered whether taking my pants off and wearing them on my head might be the missing step in the strange, mysterious ceremony of trying to get this thing to work.
In reality I had so many errors appear on the monitor screen which I couldn’t see with the headset on, I assumed I needed to launch all this stuff from Steam on the laptop rather than from within the headset.
Yes, it’s fallen quite a bit in the last week, and I’m having other issues as well, I think it’s time to nuke the whole thing from orbit and start again, frankly.
Thanks for the offer, I will very likely take you up on it! Sadly I’ve got a super busy week ahead of me, so it might have to wait for a bit. Thanks.

Almost feels like we’re right back in the autoexec days of DOS with how finicky VR is.
Yep. Made that comparison some time ago. Barely past the dancing bear stage.
PC VR. If you just want to use the Quest it’s pretty straight-forward. :)
I figured out one of my woes, at least. The USB to Ethernet dongle is caused big issues, causing regular 5-10 second hard locks, and causing the mouse cursor to judder whenever it’s moved. Unplug it, everything returns to normal. So there’s some kind of conflict going on somewhere.
Still favoring the “nuke everything and start again” option. I have a 1 TB SSD NVMe drive ready to replace my aging 256 Gb SSD root drive, it’s time to rip and tear! (well, soon)

Agreed, OVR Toolkit is an addon for steamVR and was pretty much the final straw to get me using Steam VR. With it I can control my desktop, click stupid pop up windows, etc without dragging off the helmet.
It has a lot of other neat functions, but is pretty much worth it if you’re going to spend a lot of time in Steam VR.

Ohh and a free version

Oculus Home has most of this stuff as well–pinnable windows, virtual keyboard, media controls, etc.

Is it hard to figure out and get everything configured the way you’d like?
Does it decrease game performance at all (non-Oculus hardware)?

I watched this video from the developer.
Afterwards, I had a pretty good handle on it.
Made a few shortcuts to discord, etc. I don’t THINK it’s causing my major performance issues. At least I haven’t felt like it.
So I just bought this. Can’t wait to get it.
Well I finally got PCVR working on my Quest, yay! Essential thanks to @ArenjiChaos for walking me through it. It turned out the problem was simply the USB 3 cable I was using just wasn’t compatible. I was able to use a budget version of the Link cable that I’d ordered from Amazon and… it worked perfectly.
So, I tested it with Aircar on the Oculus Store, should be easy? Yep. After 15 minutes of going OH MY GOD and trying to turn my stomach over, I declared it a success! I felt a bit weird doing barrel rolls in it, but I held onto my dinner quite nicely. I suspect that’s because I’ve done plenty of hard, diving banks in an actual helicopter without losing my lunch (a feat not all I’ve flown with can attest to, omg), so my “in vehicle VR legs” are intact.
Easy mode done. Then Steam VR. Yes! That works too! And finally, for Hard / Boss Mode, can I get Elite Dangerous working?
Well, it objected strongly, almost dumping me out at one point with a weird broken image icon in the headset, but it worked! Later, I found a whole bunch of overlapping error windows on my desktop, the cause of which remains a mystery for now. When I closed one, it took down the whole of Steam.
It was past midnight when I launched Elite, I had to get up the next day, so I just threw up an early tutorial which dumps you into a ship in the asteroid belt of a ringed planet.
My reaction…
Glad to hear it, krazy!
That’s a great price… this stuff usually costs 3 or 4 times that amount.
Yeah once I realized that no batteries did any kind of data passthrough, it opened my options way up, and this is exactly what I wanted.
Omg you guys I got virtual desktop working! I had to separate my 2G and 5G networks on my router, but even with a fair connection from the other side of the apartment, it runs near 100% great! Only minor stutters here and there!
I’m without a video card for the foreseeable future so unfortunately I can’t check these out, but…
…perhaps some of you can?
I also got Virtual Desktop working wirelessly. I brought in my extender, put the laptop on the 2 GHz channel and the Oculus on the 5 GHz channel, launched the streamer, launched VD in Oculus, and before you know it I’m in Steam VR! However, while it works, there’s just enough stutter / lag every 10 seconds or so to make it really annoying and unplayable, but I’m sure a wired ethernet connection to the laptop will fix that. If only I could get the Ethernet dongle to stop freezing my laptop. Always another hurdle to nirvana.
We tried setting up a party last night and my mic volume was ridiculously low, not sure what’s going on there. My chat was also lagging (just in the headset, no streaming) so perhaps my internet was playing up, or maybe the extender just isn’t cutting it (by amplifying an already poor signal).
