I can’t take credit, one of my awesome Twitter followers told me about them.
Oh right, I see! Pretty ideal solution by the looks of it.
Yeah, it added a bit of weight to the headset so that’s why I REALLY needed the counter weight

Still having this issue, and I notice it’s mostly left hand stuff I’m having trouble hitting. I got my first COVID shot yesterday and that arm is a little sore… yeah… that’s the problem. For sure.
When things like this happen, I switch to Pistol Whip for a few days!

So Pistol Whip is fucking great.
I played the Warplanes:WW1 games, it’s on Viveport.
On pc, the graphics are merely adequate, nothing flashy but decently crafted. However it seems they are very good on Quest (for the hardware). I think the pc version is more like a port of the Quest version.
As a VR experience, it’s very immersive and cool to drop bombs by hand to the ground, to the your pistol flare and aim manually at a globe you pass by, or use the offhand to fire the Lewis MG that is able to pivot around. Apart of dogfight around. But as a game, it has very important flaws:
-It conflates sim modes with difficulties. You can’t mix and match different levels of simulation and different mission/AI difficulties.
So you want to play on Simulation? Boy then you have to play against ace pilots that kill you on the first skirmish. Do you lower it to just Realism? Then I am barely hit by 10-12% hp during the entire mission.
-In fact that’s the second flaw of the game, and incredible; Mariana trench-level gap of difficulty between the third and fourth modes. The example I’ve given is no exaggeration, it’s my personal experience playing some missions.
-Speaking of simulation modes, the plane on Realism is still too much like a drone, it feels better on Simulation, although I wish there was something in the middle where you have a bit more of power, so you can turn the plan more 1.5 times before a stall.
-Not only those modes define the simulation and difficulty parameters, in casual and arcade you take off/land, but you have to do it on Realism and Simulation. Which sucks. It’s repetitive, it’s boring, and it isn’t even immersive because you are magically transported in front of the air strip when you do the primary objective.
-The steam page says ‘Two campaigns with hundreds of missions set in diverse locations, seasons and time of day.’. How do you think they have made ‘hundreds of missions’… there are basically six or seven missions (destroy installation, attack land convoy, attack sea convoy which is kinda the same as land convoy but with boats, attack globes, defend allied installation from bombers, attack enemy fighters) and that’s it. And they are are all simple and basic. Some enemy planes in front of you, kill them. Some globes and 4 enemy planes, kill them. There is nothing involved.
-In fact I wonder if they are just randomly generated basic missions, because in two of them, they spawned the convoy I had to attack behind me close to my spawn point, instead of you know, behind the screen of enemy planes. So I just turned around, killed them, and it was mission done before any enemy plane was even close to me.
Another convert! And another competitor on the friends high score table. Normal difficulty is the sweet spot for me though, challenging and you feel like a real badass. Hard is… whoa!
Protip, dump the left controller outside the Guardian space somewhere, and double-hand the right controller for extra accuracy! Plus when you single-hand it, it feels even more epic.
Ohhh I’ll try that, thank you!

Everyone seems to love Pistol Whip, but it just doesn’t look that good.

I haven’t. Is there a demo or just the 2 hour window?
No idea, I just bought it outright because the trailer looked amazing.
I don’t think there’s a demo, but I could be wrong. But don’t let its looks deceive you, it’s hugely enjoyable. The stylised look works really well, particularly on some levels where you get these great animations happening in the background, but really it’s all about the shooting. It’s super satisfying, and once you realise you get a higher score by timing your shots to the beat, it gets even better. You feel like you’re in some kind of John Wick music video. Some ducking and dodging is also required, but you can do it standing without too much space needed.
There are a series of “scenes” to play, each with high score tables at three difficulties, and also a campaign (which I haven’t tried yet) for experienced players. Like Beat Saber, there are mods to adjust your score, although frankly I’ve not used any because most have no score impact, and the only one that really does (no aim assist) is hard AF!
Yes I still haven’t tried it for the same reason. The graphics just look a bit… naff. Not sure what it improves over beat saber. Maybe I just prefer laser swords to guns :D
The graphics are effective in game, a real sense of scale. They’re stylized no doubt, it feels like some kind of anime but where everything “moves” to the beat, and the effect is neat. But really it’s all about the shooting and the rhythm, you get into the same kind of “zone” as you do in Beat Saber where you’re jiving to the music but when things really get going you’re constantly dancing out of the way of bullet trajectories, sidestepping and ducking obstacles while getting a bead on enemies and shooting them before they shoot at you. The scoring has some subtlety, you can choose to wait and fire on the beat, risking the enemy getting a shot off, or just shoot them when they appear. Accuracy also counts towards score.
It’s a different kind of physicality to Beat Saber, but I love it just as much. It’s a pity there’s no demo because it’s the kind of thing that you have to play to appreciate I think. I also want to try Synth Riders eventually which I hear is pretty good.
In other news, I bought Half-Life: Alyx because it was on sale and I can’t help myself (but also I just finished a cool contract and got paid for it!), but I’m not going to be playing it until I get a better PC. Also bought Cosmodread because I’m a sucker for that kind of sci-fi horror on the flat screen. If you don’t hear from me again I probably had a heart attack.
It makes my arm want to drop off. ;)
I played a bit but I never got into it that much.
That’s another reason to use two hands. Single handed weapon holding is pretty tiring!
I’m pleased to discover that my brain is successfully rewiring itself in Beat Saber, such that I’m starting to get a handle on more complex Expert level sequences. I find if I think about it and realise what I’m doing, I will instantly screw up. But if I “use the force” I seem to get through it.
