No idea if it’s available in all territories, but I noticed that Netflix over here now features “Weiner”. It’s a documentary that originally was meant to chronicle his attempt at running for NYC mayor, probably assuming that there might be a comeback story worth telling there. Well, we know how that worked out. I had it on my list ever since the movie popped up at festivals and watched it now - fascinating stuff.
I saw it bumped and I assumed it was another hit and run post by Malathor as an indictment against all Democrats somehow.
Still can’t believe Huma hasn’t dumped his sorry ass yet. If there’s one positive thing I’ll say about Weiner is that he and Alan Grayson were some of the most vocal Dems who railed against the Bush administration during the years when it was the era of you are either with us or against Freedom Fries electric boogaboo. Grayson and Wriner were especially vociferous against Republicans during the ACA debates.
Well after the second (third?) incident she did basically take her kids and leave, announcing her intention to divorce.
There are some states out there (Virginia is one, I believe) where the couple has to do a “trial separation” for some period before they can claim a “No Fault” divorce. A light Googling doesn’t seem to indicate that NY is one of those states, but it looks like New York does make it a lot easier to divorce if you’ve been separated for a while.
It’s also possible that Abadin waited until he plead guilty so that there would be no possible way that he could contest custody of the kid.
However, my assumption is that Abadin didn’t file for divorce immediately because she didn’t want the proceedings to further distract from Clinton’s campaign. A legal divorce would have meant a bunch of documents filed in court that could be requested by whatever news organizations (e.g. Judicial Watch) and used against her boss. Now that everything is over and Abadin is essentially just a private citizen, she might feel that the time is well-past “right” to get it all over with.
NY marriage laws are weirdly old fashioned. NY doesn’t allow no-contest divorces at all, and requires a 24 hour waiting period between initial filing and getting married.
IIRC, separation doesn’t really matter (although there are provisions for your spouse being missing for an extended period of time).
I’m still shocked how anyone thought him having a smartphone was a good idea. They do sell cell phones that can do nothing but call people; they can’t even SMS.
When you think about it, you can really argue that Wiener cost Clinton the election.
Clinton cost Clinton the election. Wiener didn’t help. Comey didn’t help. But there’s no way you can point to one thing and say “that was the thing that cost her the election.”
I felt like in the movie Weiner you could see he was addicted to the rush of the risky behavior and that’s why he kept pushing it. It was like a rich person shoplifting in plain sight. He had the money and resources that he could have having secret extra-marital affairs, or hiring prostitutes, or whatever. But he kept texting with total freaking strangers that could bust him just by going to any news organization! Texting, like not even having sex. Why?
