What computer games did you play in the 1980s?

Oh, yeah: “Pull up! Pull up!” At college I knew the girl who recorded that for whichever early version of Falcon was extant in the 80s.

The Pawn (by Magnetic Scrolls, 1986) was a fantastic text adventure and had me entranced.

I played 1000s of games on my C64, anything I could get, including “gems” like this!

Some of my C64 favs:
[ul]
[li]Ultima 1=3[/li][li]Questron[/li][li]Below the Root[/li][li]Ring Side Seat (we ran a league)[/li][li]Archon[/li][/ul]

Some of my arcade favs:
[ul]
[li]Robotron (played it for 6 straight hours until arcade employee kicked me out)[/li][li]Assault (tank one with dual sticks)[/li][li]Crazy Climber[/li][li]Dragon’s Lair![/li][li]Defender[/li][/ul]

Archon 1 and 2.
Pirates!
Blue Max
Raid on… something Bay? Helicopter game.
Elite
Temple of Apshai
Spy Hunter
Impossible Mission
Jumpman

Those are the C64 titles I can remember offhand but there were so many more… I was born in 1978 so those were young, formative times for me!

Raid on Bungeling Bay?

Tons, but one is still pretty cool even by today’s standards in my book:
Wizard’s Crown

In the early early 80’s…

The Maze and the Minotaur

Which was kind of like this.

Use urn.
You can’t do that now.
Shake urn.
You can’t do that now.
Pee in urn.
You can’t do that now.
What the hell do I do with this urn?
Bet you’d really like to know, wouldn’t you?

I’m playing a mud again and there is a lot of that. Irritating, but at least I can generally vent my rage by shooting another player full of ice spikes.

Hey I forgot about Zork

Mostly console games in the early 80s but later in the decade it was:

The Ancient Art Of War
The Bard’s Tale
Pools Of Radiance
Curse Of The Azure Bonds
Zork
Stellar 7
Sword Of The Samurai
Ikari Warriors
Pirates!

And a few others I no longer remember.

My sister and I played a lot of the Zork games on the C64, along with other Infocom games. We got a Macintosh Plus in '85 or so. On that I played:
Uninvited
Deja Vu
Dark Castle
MacGolf
Some flight simulators
The Dallas game

Also had an Intellivision. Played lots of:
Miner 2049er
Discs of Tron
Football
Donkey Kong
Utopia

Geez. My decades are blurring together on this one. I played a lot back then, but I don’t recall the specific years for most of them so I’ll have some fun looking them up. Here’s a bunch:

Zork series (1980-1982, by Infocom)
Wizardry series (1981-, by Sir-Tech)
Planetfall (1983, by Infocom)
Ultima series (1983-, by Origin)
Elite (1984, by Braben & Bell/Firebird)
Hitchhikers’ Guide (1984, by Infocom)
Autoduel (1985, by Origin)
F-15 Strike Eagle with the super cool/dorky “Here’s how you do the real life Libya mission” card (1985, by Microprose)
Jet (1985, by subLOGIC)
Gunship (1986, by Microprose)
Starflight (1986, by Binary Systems/Electonic Arts)
Pirates! (1987, by Microprose)
F-19 (1988, by MicoProse)
Wasteland (1988, by Interplay/Electronic Arts)
Knights of Legend (1989, by Origin)
Mechwarrior (1989, by Dynamix/Activision)

TRS-80:
Voyage of the Valkyries
Starfighters
Everest Climber
Scott Adam’s Adventure games
All the Big 5 games I could get my hands on (Weerd, Robot Attack, Galaxy Invasion, etc)

IBM-PC:
Infocom text games (Deadline, Zork, etc
Ancient Art of War/@Sea
Carmen Sandiego
Police/Space/Kings Quest
Bards Tale series
Sentinel Worlds
Pool of Radiance/Azure Bonds/Silver Blades
Starflight
Crescent Hawks Inception
Empire (the civ of the 80s?)
Lords of Conquest
Begin (star trek simulator - fun stuff)
Gunship
F19
Mechwarrior
probably a bunch of others that I can’t remember

Am I the only person who played Bilestoad on the Apple //e? That game was amazing.

Rogue
a bunch of the Infocom games (the Zorks, Deadline, Witness, Hitchhikers Guide, etc.)
the Wizardry series
the Bards Tale series
the Ultima series
the Might and Magic series
the Gold Box series
a bunch of the SSI games (Carrier Force, Guadalcanal Campaign, Mech Brigade, etc.)
Carriers at War
Rescue Raiders
Wings of Fury
Millionaire? (it was a stock market game that I really enjoyed)
Pinball Construction Set
Castle Wolfenstein
Flight Simulator
Lode Runner
Archon

There are a bunch more, but those are probably most of my favorites.

Super Mario Land uh… and Tetris?

PCs did cost millions of dollars back then.

Ah yes, the '80s. I played a lot of the early Sierra games, together with a handful of early flight sims and arcade ports. These are some of the ones I remember:

Colossal Cave Adventure
The Black Cauldron
Space Quest
King’s Quest III
Police Quest
Archon
Robot Odyssey
The Dam Busters
F-15 Strike Eagle
F-19 Stealth Fighter
Stellar 7
Silpheed

I’m sure I’m forgetting some, and many of the other games I remember from that era were actually from the early '90s.

Awesome list. Glad I’m not the only one who remembers Jet. :) LOVED that one.

For it’s time, yes it was. We had a Bilestoad tournament at computer camp one year.

Jet! How could I forget it?

Was I the only proto-nerd playing Begin?
