Of course memory is a screwy thing. So if it was some kind of fake, they got me big time.

It was well-done fakery, but it was covered in an interview with the writer/director several years later (they intentionally tried to keep the illusion up as long as they could manage).

The movie was written and directed by John Alan Schwartz (credited as “Alan Black” for writing and as “Conan LeCilaire” for directing). Schwartz also took credit as second unit director, this time as “Johnny Getyerkokov”. He also appears in one of the segments of the film, as the leader of the alleged flesh eating cult in San Francisco and has brief appearances in several other movies of this series. This movie features Michael Carr as the narrator, and ‘creative consultant’ called “Dr. Francis B. Gröss”, whose voice is reminiscent of Leonard Nimoy in the popular TV show In Search of… . John Alan Schwartz has said that this movie’s budget was $450,000 and there are estimates that it has grossed more than $35 million worldwide in theatrical releases, not including rentals.[2]

Although several of the human death scenes and one depicting a monkey being killed are obvious fakes[4] (with Allan A. Apone, make-up and special effects artists for the movie saying that about 40% of it is fake),[5] some of the footage is genuine. In their book Killing for Culture , authors David Kerekes and David Slater note that the nadir of the movie is the inclusion of an extreme fatal accident; “the shattered remains of a cyclist are seen under a semi-tractor trailer. The camera pans long enough to capture paramedics scooping up blood clots, brain matter, and clumps of hair from the tarmac – this incident is authentic and culled from newsreels.”[6]

According to Schwartz, the scene in the film wherein a murderer is executed by electric chair was achieved with the use of a fake chair built in a friend’s loft and toothpaste to emulate saliva. Electric “zapping” sounds were added in post-production.[7]

They used cauliflower for the brain and stage blood; that was entirely faked… there was a real monkey, but they smacked him in the head with styrofoam mallets and it left the set perfectly fine if probably highly annoyed at humanity

And in the realm of true horror… My wife is allowing my step-daughter’s suicidal ex-wife to live here for a week. She is a professional martyr and I can’t stand her. But the wife is also a martyr type. Way too nice to people. I can put my foot down and refuse. Then I deal with a borderline hysterical wife. Or I let her stay for a week and be personally miserable.

I have already explained to the wife that this woman is not to expect conversation with me. Looks like I’m cooking for three now. And I get to feel uncomfortable in my own home for a week.

Am I the asshole here? Am I cold and uncaring? Well, about the bitch I am.

How did the wife find out about this? Kathy called Autumn and Autumn called my wife. So I blame her mainly. She knew if she told the wife about this that she would react the way she did. Manipulation, pure and simple.

Are you drinking or is the ex-in-law drinking? Neither is a good sign, but the bad outcomes play out different depending on which of you is stumbling around the house at 2pm.

More seriously, stay strong. Family drama in your own home is the worst because you can’t just walk away and go home like you can with work drama/friend drama/extended-family-drama. You can do it, it’s just a week!

Depending on where you live and the circumstances of why she’s staying with you, you may really want to consider the possibility that she will squat past a week. It can be really, really hard to kick someone out if they overstay their welcome, particularly in these pandemic times.
