Apparently, the story is that a crocodile will cry/look like they’re crying now and then. Some people are stupid enough to take that to mean they’re not interested in your yummy man-flesh, which of course they are.
So “fake tears meant to lure someone into a feeling of safety”.

I think I’m getting progressively worse at English for every forum post I make.
Crocodiles cannot cry, but, when chewing their food, it will press upwards against the roof of their mouth, this causes their eyes to leak water. Therefore it was an old convention that they were crying over having to kill their food.
Thus ‘crocodile tears’ are tears you don’t really mean.
That sounds more likely than my story, which I can’t remember where I got it from.

I didn’t know about crocodiles getting teary eyed when they eat. “Crocodile tears” will now have special meaning to me that it never had before.
They don’t chew, though – look at their teeth: no molars. Rip and gulp is more like it.
