I was just checking out the front page and noticed the link to the latest FSF from back in the spring. What ever happend to this feature? Is it appearing on some other site or is it just in hibernation these days?
And where’s the coverage on the latest platformers for Win/Mac?
FSF has been around for a long time. I am not surprised that the front page hasn’t been updated or anything, I just thought FSF might have shuffled off to some other site without leaving a forwarding address.
See, I always thought of FSF as being more about the people that populated csipcgfs rather than the sims themselves.
Those people were pretty screwed up mostly, especially the people those that were always in it. At this point, with the newsgroup nothing more than a pale shadow of what it once was, one would have to go to various forums to get the same sort of news, and browsing 5 forums takes much longer than one newsgroup.
That’s true to some extent. It was also about hearing Chase rail on games or whatever tripped this trigger, but it did focus heavily on the newsgroup.
Got a kick out of reading this:

ahem, weren’t you appearing pretty regularly?
I know, that’s what makes it funny.
The problem is that nothing flight-sim related really pushes my buttons any more. I mean, I could probably spend a couple of hours cranking out a bile-filled summary of the current disastrous fiasco with Falcon 4/SP4/FF/Operation Infinite Resolve, but I just don’t CARE.
I lurk over c.s.i.p.g.f-s, and it’s pretty much boiled down to same ten people endlessly rehashing political bullshit. YAWN.
I wander over to a populated web forum, say, SimHQ’s, and each sim category has the same six absolutely-fawning lickspittle fanbois and the same troll would loves to annoy them. Regardless of my satirical acumen, I just can’t make fun of people who think that Strike Fighters Beta One is just THE GRAETEST SIM EVAR!!! over and over again.
Once upon a time, the flight-sim group was a cantankerous, lively, and rich community worth covering; and when it wasn’t, I always had the random appearance of Dr. L. Ron Smart to kick around. Now it just sucks, just like the overall flight-sim scene itself.
So I’ve found a new hobby – trying to wrap my head around the math needed for programming a space-sim. I can hear my old 11th and 12th grade physics teachers laughing in the past when I told them oh so many years ago “why the hell should I learn this stuff? I’ll never use MATRICES!” sigh

I must have missed the “golden age”, when the group was ever anything but the same ten people endlessly rehashing political bullshit, Scharmie. What was it, five minutes in 1992?

Flight-sim was actually pretty fresh when I arrived somewhat late on the scene in '96 or so. (Your particular trolling grounds, space-sim, was still in the planning phases, but I digress.) Most of the people there at that time were the old hands from the pay networks – lots of GEnie Air Warrior types, lots of Warbirds types, and many people from the CI$ flight-sim forums. And, surprisingly enough to those who look at f-s now, the group was known for its very good signal-to-noise ratio. Hell, developers even posted there fairly frequently.
That’s pretty much all gone now. Oh well. There’s always masturbation.
I take offense at that! All the csipg groups were my trolling grounds, thank you very much. It’s just that Derek was so much more entertaining back then. Now he’s all sane, which is boring. And I did get a bit caught up in Huffmania.
I think you can mark c.s.i.p.g.f-s’s death as the day Robin Kim’s joystick died and he became an Everquest zombie.

That’s one of them. Robin Kim was always one of those people I couldn’t drop into a Follies, because the man was usually making too much damn sense. Other signs of the flight-sim apocalypse that happened roughly in the same time period:
- Andy Hollis goes back to driving ugly cars instead of making pretty sims.
- A-10 dies.
- Falcon 4 dies at 1.08.
- M1TP3 dies.
- Gunship! released an an unfinished arcade game.
Aren’t these both just a byproduct of the Hasbro takeover of Microprose? That was when I knew flight sims were in trouble.
I bought a copy of Gunshit! to help keep sales up & hopefully save M1TP3. It’s still unopened.
I have to say I’m sad to see the flight sim genre (heck, the entire sim genre in general) in such a state of dissaray. It’s the first computer game genre I got into back in the early 80’s, and I still love 'em today. Back in '96, when scharmers came on the scene, a resurgence was brought upon by sims like DI’s Apache and EF2000. Now what do we have to look forward to? A Century of Flight? Another CFS add-on?
Heck, space sims are in even worse shape. Damned shame, really. I’m still glad folks are creating stuff like StarShatter and Star Wraith to cater to those of us who still care. :) And don’t even TALK to me about the horrible shape that Naval sims are in (i.e. almost non-exsistant).
Yep. And then you ended up being the only person left worth quoting and look where that got me.
Ladies and gentleman, the one word game review.
It was great back in '96-'97,and I think a big reason was the Warbirds community posting so much-lots of good posts, not just on Warbirds per se,but on WW2 related air warfare topics. And I can still remember the flood of posts when a sim such as EF2000 was first released, and most of them on topic. It was one of the Usenet groups most worth reading, and was one of the hardest hit by web based discussion boards at other sites.Anyone heard from Ordbot lately?
Don’t do that! Like a demon, if you invoke his name he’ll magically appear from the netherworld and demand a discussion of snaprolls if he is to spare the devouring of your soul.
Oh, poppycock! That’s just the ages-old Tale of the Man Called Derek (Ph.D) applied to some lesser person.
Flight Simulator 2004
Lock On : Modern Air Combat (with an A10 no less!)
Knights Over Europe
Oleg’s next sim
Things are quiet on the flight sim front but not quite dead just yet.
Yes looks like Harpoon 4 is sinking into the sunset. But Sonalysts (688i & Sub Command) is apparently working on another naval simulation that will encompass both ships and subs.
