What going on with Dell?

Living in the extended Austin metroplex area, it seems like Dell is either abandoning or selling off most of its real estate in Round Rock, and what’s there feels basically abandoned. If you look online as well, there’s hardly any job openings in the RR area. I don’t expect any kind of big dramatic implosion, but this does feel a bit like folding up shop. This is at the same time the stock price of Dell has about doubled over the last year.

I know they’ve done many series of cuts. I’m surprised to hear that about RR though, I figured they would fold everything else first.

Riding an unsustainable server wave based off the latest fad (AI) has a way of doing that to your stock. For a little while.

They’ve been rolling over a lease on a building I know of in Europe for nearly a near now while they conduct a “global review” of their real estate. They also just sold their UK headquarters building.

How did WFH affect Dell?

They were already unwinding all the offices they bought in the EMC merger, now they’re unwinding all the people they got. They’re very much WFH, inside sales, etc.

Like most corps they change with the wind. Michael was all into championing it until he wasn’t, at which point he told everyone to come back to the office.

The response to basically doing a “soft layoff” was everyone giving him the bird: Dell said return to the office or else—nearly half of workers chose “or else” | Ars Technica
