I’m hosting a board game retreat for some of my friends this weekend. So far we’ve played a seven player game of 1862, and loads of other games will follow. Not sure if we’ll play any more games with seven players or mainly break up into two or three tables.
So, this weekend saw me playing Death Stranding as usual, which I’ve been playing almost exclusively since it came out. I love this game.
However, this weekend saw me playing other games too! Horizon: Zero Dawn was one of those; first time I tried to run it I had numerous issues. However, I tried changing some settings later and got to a point where it’s playable and enjoyable enough in my setup, so I see myself playing it more even before a patch arrives. On that note, I loved the introduction, particularly the “training montage”. Great way to have you attached to the main character. I’m looking forward to playing more!
The other game I played a fair amount of was Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. And it’s really enjoyable. Lovable characters, great storytelling, many funny situations, and endearing events as well. It goes to show how you don’t need fantastic production values or impressive tech to make a great game that can be truly enjoyed. I’ll probably finish this one pretty soon - it has 4 cases, and I’m playing the last one already - but I have two more games in the series to look forward to, since this is part of the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy I got on Steam. So I guess I’ll have a lot of “hold it!”, “take that!” and “objection!” to see through in the near future. ;)
I did a bit of light-hearted gaming this weekend. Supraland taxed my brain too much so I had to look up a couple of puzzle solutions in order to not get stuck. And The Touryst taxed my jumping skills a little in what otherwise is not a platforming jumping game at all.
Anno 1800 When I’m at my desk. Such a gorgeous game. I’ve hit a slight wall in terms of growth though.
Finally working on FF12 which I had on the PS2 back in the day but never got too far into. On my Switch I’m really enjoying it. The gambit system makes minor rando monsters easy and enjoyable to grind but I’m also learning how to use it and my various characters to take on the boss fights. And thank god for auto save when you move into a new area. No more waiting an hour to get to a save crystal. Good voice acting and a great design of the world.

Finally got the box in working order. Then a humongous heat wave hit. Spend friday night doing DCS Fight Club with the boys at Mudspike. I was drenched and drained in the end, the rest of the weekend was sweating, reading and Netflix while impersonating a viscous fluid on the couch.

I put a bunch of time into the PS4 Spiderman game this weekend after picking up the complete edition for $20 on PSN Sale. For the first couple of hours, I was pretty ho-hum about it and just about uninstalled. It just seemed like your typical urban superhero open-world game: a carbon copy of Infamous or Prototype or Saint’s Row 4 or Arkham City. But a few hours in, the story started to sink its hooks into me, the traversal became utterly joyful and painless, the combat fluid and fun, and I really started to enjoy myself.
New Rift owner. Picked up a used CV-1 as an impulse buy when the opportunity came up.
Checking off:
- Elite: Dangerous: still a stupid game, but Frontier at least went all the way with VR implementation
- Il-2 Battle of {whatever}: sugoi sugoi! And I didn’t even shoot anything. Makes me really look forward to FS2020’s eventual VR implementation.
- Overload: takes prize for being the first VR game I played to make me actually green around the gills. I manned up and finished a couple of levels, though.
- Other stuff with Virtual Desktop. Only dabbled here. Not nearly as good as true VR games, but with enough tweaking there’s a pleasing sense of depth.
- Wanted to try XWA in VR but just never got around to it.
I’m pretty sure this is my only toe-dip into VR until prices come way, way down, and I’m not even going to bother buying the Touch controllers or anything. VR is neat for sims (my TrackIR has gone into storage) but kinda meh for most PC stuff. My WASD muscle memory energy is strong, but there are limits.

Did you get the controllers with it? If so, VTOL VR should be right up your alley.
Pretty much, no. I think I got some weird X-Box variant of the CV-1 package. It has an xboxen controller (not present in my purchase) and no Touch controllers. I have no interest in grabby-grabby or pokey-pokey ATM. Although the body projection in Elite Dangerous is fucking eerie. I mean, it’s like my arms are right there.
And for sims, it’s not that big of deal. HOTAS has been the Way and the Life for me since 1994, and if it can’t be mapped on the stick or throttle, it ain’t important.
Planetfall and Battle Brothers.

Anno 1800, Planetfall, Monster Train and Tametsi are taking up all my time at the moment. There aren’t enough gaming hours in the day currently!

Nowhere Prophet and One Step From Eden for me.
Oh yeah, I almost beat Barony for the first time, but the Baron cleaned me up on L20. Poop.
Having a lot of fun with Fall Guys https://store.steampowered.com/app/1097150/Fall_Guys_Ultimate_Knockout/
Very fun 60 player battle royal in the style of crazy gameshows like “Takeshi’s Castle”. It was first place on Twitch for a while, glad they have a hit on their hands.
More Shadow Empire (with new logistics!) when I still had energy to think.
Approaching Infinity when I was too tired to think.

Apocrypha (Board Game)
I’m back in the saddle again. Spilled water catastrophes be damned.

Forza Horizon 3 (Xbox One)
I haven’t played this one regularly in a couple years and suddenly got an itch to dive back in. I really miss the Groove Music custom MP3 playlist integration. All the other stations play mostly filler.
I also find it odd this time around that the game looks much less realistic than I remember. The cars all looks super plasticy and the scenery more texturey. I don’t know why, I haven’t played any high fidelity games I can think of that should have pushed my subconscious expectations up at all… not unless you count DOOM Eternal, but the graphics in that one aren’t anything to write home about. It doesn’t ruin the game for me by any means, but it just suddenly seems dated for some unexplained reason.
I’m just loving my time with the game though. VROOM VROOM.
I tried Hearthstone’s Battlegrounds mode for the first time last night, and this happened:
I think I’ll retire.
It was mostly No Man’s Sky in VR last weekend, plus idling along with a bit of Tametsi.
