Well, around Europe mostly (Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Holland…), though also Australia (though that was 3 years ago) & South Africa.
Perhaps I’m just blind and didn’t notice them when they WERE present, but I’m positive there aren’t any around here (Germany). Seems odd, since that link states that the system was introduced in Europe during the 80s, I wonder why it never really got more widely used?
Have any Europeans seen these around and can correct me if I’m wrong?
Around here I haven’t seen a single station without the possibility to pay at the pump with cash or card.

I was able to pay at the pump in rural Norway when I was there a few years ago.

Very common in the UK, and became usable once they stopped with the nonsense about registering your card with them.

A petrol station I worked at ten years ago had a system where you could pay at the pump. That system was me. I’d then run into the shop and put the cash in the register. I would also pump petrol for people and check their oil levels.
I think we were the only station in the county still doing that ten years ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if no-one in the county did it now.
Cue Oregon gas pump fascism rage/confusion in 3…2…
There is a reason I like to fill up in Vancouver, WA and make it through Oregon without stopping when I drive down to California…

As an Australian I’ll note that being able to pay at the bowser is unusual around here.
i’ll screw up the thread even more and point out some stations give you a discount on gas if you pay cash.
by the way, patience is great, but given the choice to spend an hour to teach people how to do x,y,z so it never happens again or suffer through 59 minutes spread out over the rest of our lives, most of us would choose to teach. but we don’t have the choice so we have to suffer for no apparent reason.
Speaking of card usage and Germany, they suck at paying with debit/credit and when they do have machines, they have the most unergonomic and stupid way of using them which takes forever and ever.
Also, their pizza sucks.
Implementation manuals that document the request message, but not the response.

You’re doing that on purpose, aren’t you?
Good point! My friends with apartments in Berlin are amazed as how old fashioned and paper centric the supposedly modern Germany is.
There I was at the huge new Berlin Hauptbahnhof finding two gifts for my daughters with 10 minutes before my train left and the lady says that they don’t accept credit cards…
Rage!
“We’re sorry, Mario, but your petrol is in another castle!”

I know it’s Aussie slang. I’m equally certain, this being a gaming site and all, that he knows exactly how silly it sounds.
You know what? Never mind. I forgot I shouldn’t bother talking to you.
It’s not really “slang”… which would impliy that only certain groups or young people or whatever would be using it; it’s the Australian terminology. We all call 'em bowsers.
Bowser also means dog, doesn’t it?

I don’t see what relevance he has in this situation.
