Earth First!

Planets with breathable atmospheres first! :)

Chris Dodd (“Everyday Astronaut”) had an informal interview with Elon Musk at the SpaceX event. It’s really more of a discussion than an interview.

Elon lays down some heavy duty engineering advice:

  • If the design is taking too long, the design is wrong.
  • “The product errors reflect the organizational errors.
  • “One of the biggest traps for smart engineers is optimizing a thing that shouldn’t exist.”
  • Am I asking the right questions? If I am asking the correct questions, the correct answers will come to you.
  • If someone can explain there is a way to make your design better, this is a gift.

That’s pretty good advice for engineering in general.

Clears we need to smash Mars and Venus together and make Earth 2.

Good idea.

Now that’s the kind of innovative thinking I can get behind.

I’d always thought saying “water ice on Mercury” was like saying “a snowball’s chance in Hell”, but:

Ice on mercury and they discovered it with Arecibo’s radio telescope. Funny, I was just reading commentary on how giant radio telescopes like the Chinese monster that was recently opened to the world have kind of fallen out of favor as a useful tool.

How are you supposed to hear alienz without a giant radio telescope?

Giant speak and spell attached to a cheap phonograph.

I don’t know how old this is but I found it fun to read

XKCD on orbital speed

Mark Maimone is a former flight software and mobility subsystem lead on Mars Science Laboratory. He gives an awesome talk about the ins and outs of software engineering for the Curiosity rover on Mars. If you have an interest in embedded systems, autonomous systems, and flight software, check out this talk about introducing C++ to Mars.

On a less technical and intellectual level - I really dig Kate Rubins’s new spacesuit!

Her suit is like camo for space stations.

Yea she’s like a floating head LOL

First all female (there are two of them) spacewalk occuring right now. Live feed on CNN and I’m sure elsewhere.

The mentioned they are installing a battery charger/discharger. I get charging a battery, obviously. Why would you want to discharge one? Disposal?
