How so? An explosion is a rapid expansion, which is surely exactly what the Big Bang was.

With the way our luck is going the energy that explosion released probably set off the vacuum decay of the universe.

Well, an explosion is mass and pressure gradient equalizing through space, but before the BB, mass, pressure, and dimensions didn’t exist?

There are several definitions of the word “explosion”, and that is not one of them to my knowledge. But regardless, “a rapid expansion” is one such definition, and that pretty aptly describes the Big Bang.

Great history here

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission.

I great article by Commander Lovell, 92, and NASA admin James Bridenstein pointing out what we can accomplish in a very short period of time.

Nice to see SpaceX has pissed of the Russian in addition to ULA, and the Europeans.

Holy shit, guys. From this site you can watch the whole Apollo 13 drama in realtime. The detail of this site is incredible. You can listen to every separate conversation going on in the control room at any specific moment.

So Nasa released a “what did Hubble see on your birthday” application. I was excited to see all the images over the last 30 years, but it appears that I only got one - it’s cool. I think it’s funny how the description says it’s a trio of galaxies, when if you look around the image there are at least 30 more and probably 50.

Wow that is so cool!

What a fun idea!

On my birthday in 1995 came one of the most famous images from Hubble,

The Hubble Deep Field

Mine of Neptune in 2011 is slightly underwelming at first…until you realize that Neptune is approx. 4.4 billion kilometers (or 2.9 billion miles) away… Pretty darn sharp after all!

Boeing: “We’re barely even trying”

Speaking of space… watching Moonraker now. What a crazy fun plot. Rich billionare goes into space with a hundred supermodels to kill the Earth and repopulate it. And a space suit laser fight at the end. It’s my guily pleasure.

NASA’s selection of SpaceX over Boeing seems to be making Russia angry too for whatever reason.

That Apollo-13-in-Realtime website is coming up on the “Houston, we’ve had a problem” moment in a little over an hour. And before that, I think the TV transmission to the general public (which you see a version of in the movie) is coming up in about a half hour.

I just saw some footage of Lovell’s and Haise’s wives gathering to watch the TV transmission and I think they’re wearing nearly identical outfits to what was in the movie.

I’ve been listening to this off and on since yesterday. It’s fascinating and kind of surreal.
