I know Arecibo was kind of teetering on the brink, funding-wise, so this can’t be good; it’s going to require extensive repairs. It had unique capabilities for solar system radar studies. I wonder if the new giant dish in China is sufficient replacement.
Got to see this a few years ago when i was hiking in Puerto Rico. From a few miles away and up in surrounding hills it was amazing. Certainly hope they can get it repaired.
The dish and I share roughly the same birthday. It’s old. It needs to be replaced.
Maybe one of these “forward-thinking” billionaires can spare a few quatloos to build another one. Or we can Kickstarter it. Otherwise…

Anyone able to see the Perseids last night? It was clear in Southern Maine last night but after sitting out till midnight I gave up having fed many mosquitoes but having seen no meteors.
Rain here, for the duration. One of these years I’m going to make a special trip somewhere with a big sky and less humidity.

Starlink is getting 100 megabits per second now. They say they will push it up to a gig once they have all 12,000 satellites in the sky.
They also say the satellites have space lasers to transmit to one another. Elon Musk controlling 12,000 space lasers, boring tunnels beneath our cities, building a fleet of AI-controlled cars, and hoping to plant chips in our skulls. We need James Bond.
If Bond fails, then we will need Sarah Connor.
