Shame to see it shut down. I’ve been on that plane - got a tour in the early days when we were considering applying for time for a project I was pursuing as a grad student. Unfortunately it didn’t have the sensitivity needed for that particular observation.

Anyway, speaking of infrared imaging, here’s a preview from a JWST scientist of what will be released Tuesday morning. It’s a good thread, worth a click-through.

Didn’t NASA have a similar flying telescope in the 80s/90s? I could have sworn I saw numerous pictures of it in various magazines.

I feel like I’ve seen so many artists’ renditions of stuff in space that I hope the real thing still looks amazing.

You’re most likely thinking of Kuiper, which was SOFIA’s predecessor.

As emphasized in that thread, keep in mind that these are going to be infrared images - that means false color, since it’s outside the part of the spectrum humans can see.

That is jaw dropping

Holy cow that video is amazing.

So close

Typical Biden, taking credit for a 25 year effort that TFG didn’t bother to cancel. /s

Is Joe on the toilet?

IF THIS DOESN’T START SOON THEN I’M GOING TO START CALLING HIM SLEEPY JOE, TOO.

Why don’t they just have some people from NASA or an astrophysicist with a personality do the press conference here?

Don’t announce a press conference and the globe excite\d if you can’t keep anywhere close to the schedule, guys.
