In one of the videos yesterday, they did talk briefly about their aesthetic choices in how the IR bands are combined into the color image.

The famous FAFO galaxy.

This site has a handy slider for comparing Hubble and JWST images:

Maybe eventually they’ll be able to look back far enough to see the Big Bang itself…and find out it’s a fart from a giant space turtle.

Looking at the gravitational lensing and the insane distance/time of the objects in the image I was wondering. If there was a perfectly placed object that created a lensing effect for us on Earth, would it be possible to see a single galaxy in two locations/times? I’m assuming the answer is ‘no’ but figured some brain type here could confirm. And no, I wasn’t high when I thought of this.

I read there’s several duplicate galaxies in that Webb image, but I can’t find a source that actually circles and identifies them.

Yes; it’s been done, too. Given the time scales being discussed, it’s probably of limited use, but for something like this it comes in handy -

Awesome, thanks for the info. As I was reading that article I recalled that I had read it before. So cool. And crazy ass amazing.

No monoliths spotted… yet

Here’s it happening to a galaxy (from an older study). The image in the bottom left is a reconstruction from the duplicates, with its actual position indicated.

In the beginning was Great A’Tuin.

Much better alignment here

The thing those comparisons don’t convey is just how much freaking larger Webb images are. I’ve downloaded the full-sized, uncompressed PNGs and the smallest one is about 25MB. The larger ones, consisting of thousands of stitched images, are about 125MB. They’re incredible to zoom in at 1:1.

It’s like going from 480p to 4K.

Welp, I know where my next vacation will be. Might take a while to get there though.

You can only see the two images of the quasar as dots, not resolved galaxies, but a few months ago I took a picture with two images of a single gravitationally lensed object with a 6" telescope from my back yard: Astrophotography - #85 by gruntled

… which was goddam awesome :)

Team @gruntled , Fuck Yeah!

And it seems that’s nothing compared to the data available for science. Sounds exciting.

I would like Dr. Becky to come to my house, slip into something more comfortable, and then yak at me for six hours straight on astrophysics. Best evening I can think of.

Bwahahahaha

Absolute moronic tool is gone. Will be curious to see how awful the next guy is.
