Yep the relative position is really helpful, especially for this generation. The RTX 20-series muddled things because you didn’t get much in the way of performance, they focused more on ray tracing. And then they went and added Super versions of all but the top end card.
I ended up with a RTX 2080 that came with the laptop I bought (desktop version of card) which in a normal generation you would think would be a significant jump from my GTX 1080 but it’s not really the case. Looking forward to the next gen when I finally have a non-insane upgrade path for my desktop 1080.

Yep, the 2080 is basically a 1080ti, which is not a huge jump from a 1080. The only really meaningful upgrade from a 1080 is a 2080ti, which costs twelve hundred freaking dollars.
And that’s why I, and so many others, am skipping this GPU generation entirely. Nvidia’s greed is truly offputting.

For sure. If I didn’t have a long string of problems with AMD cards stretching back to the old ATI days, I’d probably make the switch. As it is, I’ll just wait another generation unless Nvidia really drops the ball again and AMD starts outperforming them without needing a small nuclear reactor to provide enough wattage.
One thing is for sure is that I sure as hell wasn’t going to drop $1200-$1600 on a friggin’ video card upgrade. That’s a significant portion of the cost of my entire new laptop!

Stusser I failed you! I caved over the weekend and bought a used EVGA RTX2080 with 2+ years of transferred warranty from a co-worker who just got a rtx2080ti. Mostly as a hold over card till the 3000 series (probably) next fall. I just couldn’t take the tiny random issues I kept having with my 3 year old gtx1080.
I swear Nvidia is half assing drivers for older GTX1080 cards. So its a 20-25% performance bump for me, but also a like-new card with no displayport random black screen / fan issues. :)
RTX looks pretty darn nice in BF5 at 1080p, and getting a solid 60fps in Watch dogs 2 without having to sacrifice ultra settings is so sweet to see.
And now I am ready for the 2020 Q1 big boys, Dying Light 2 / Bloodlines 2 / CP2077.

I commissioned an artists’ recreation of this.

Well done, sir.
Yep, 20-25% is about right. If your old card was having issues, that of course changes the story!
I needed a laugh today, @Menzo, and you supplied it. Thanks.

My old gtx1080 works great if I roll drivers back to about a year ago before the 20xx series. :p

Weird. My 1080 works fine with current drivers. Nvidia sold a lot of Pascal cards so any issues would be a really big deal.

Yep, I really don’t know, drivers pre-v400.xx and the card is fine. I’ve bought over a dozen new hdmi and displayport cables combined. Tried 2 different monitors and a tv. Still every few days random black screens. And they can happen even when doing nothing but staring at the desktop. Its why I am passing on Gigabyte for the foreseeable future and was lucky to snag the EVGA for $550.

Oh I did, I have a box of them in the basement. :)
It all started last year when I bought a Gigabyte RTX2080 to replace my GTX1080 and it turned out to be defective , I went through 4 cables before the card just crapped out with space invaders and sparky pixels all over the screen. It had micron memory, which was bad.
That card lasted 4 days. :)
Evga card I have now has Samsung DDR6 that I can OC like crazy, (1000MHz)
Guy at work told me with the overclock its gonna be almost on par with the RTX2080Super.

Just came across this regarding the 2080S cards.

I sold my RTX 2060 and purchased a Powercolor Red Dragon RX 5700 XT. It has zerofan which is nice, is a little louder than the 2060 under load, and doesn’t get particularly hot (I ran furmark + prime95 for an hour and monitored temps). So far so good and I’m glad to be away from Nvidia.
I love so much that today I can gawk at those insane RTX2080TI speeds, regretting not allowing myself to afford it, but knowing that tomorrow it will be blown away by whatever comes next and before long will be considered a slow as molasses dinosaur.
Damn cool hobby.
AMD’s assault on cheap 1080P gaming has almost arrived: https://www.anandtech.com/show/14949/amd-announces-radeon-rx-5500-series-for-desktop-and-mobile
Budget laptops will become more interesting.
