Nvidia set the price/performance expectation. AMD aren’t competing, so Nvidia can reset the price/performance however they want. And that’s what they did with this gen.

No shit. Just saying, it sucks.

I look at 5700XT and feel kind of iffy jumping in because while it is cheaper, it doesn’t have ray tracing. And Control already showed what ray trace can do to enhance a title. IMO this isn’t 1 year ago, where there is no ray-tracing title at all. We have at least one spectacular title already justifying the ray tracing premium.
If PS5/XBOX whatever-cardinal-number-they-want-to-use-after-ONE has ray tracing build in, then all the more reason not to bother with AMD at this point, going forward.

The 2060 Super costs the same, uses 30% less power, offers basically the same performance (depending on the game, 0-10% slower), and as you noted supports ray-tracing. The 5700XT can’t compete with the 2070 Super on performance, but it is $100 cheaper.

2060S really hit that price/performance sweet spot for me, as long as I stick to 1080p.

2060S should be overkill for 1080p, it should handle 1440p quite nicely. Remember it’s basically a GTX1080, minus a couple percent.
The 1080 Ti may have launched at $699, but we both know it went up substantially in price after that, which I’m sure played a part in nVIDIA’s pricing decisions. Having said that, even when the 2080 came out I recall it being quite a bit cheaper than what 1080 Ti’s were going for, and outperformed it in several situations (along with having ray tracing, which may not count for a lot, but there’s that).
I won’t argue though that the Supers should have been what was initially offered (and I did feel slightly screwed, because I bought a 2060). But other than that, I don’t think prices have gone up tremendously, or price / performance dropped significantly.
The 2080 Ti handily beat the 1080 Ti and the Titan XP (at the same cost), so I can kinda understand why they wouldn’t price it hundreds of dollars below what those were selling for.

1080tis were available new for $600 after the 20-series released, until they sold out. If they cost $700 why wouldn’t you just buy a 2080?
Supers offer the right performance levels, but the prices are much higher than the previous generation. I posted the list, do the math.
The x80ti never competed with the previous generation’s x80ti or titan, so I don’t know what you’re talking about there. Of course it has to be much faster.

In my experience, you need an overkill for a consistent 1080p/60fps/Ultra experience, so that the framerate never dip below 60 even in the most taxing scene.
And of course it has to be more expensive, so I’m not sure why you’re saying prices are “much higher”. If you’re talking about the non Ti 2080, then all I can tell you is that nVIDIA’s been selling high end video cards for ~$700 for over 15 years. When they have actual competition, they may price less to stay competitive. When they own the market like they did back then (and do today), this is how it goes.

Prices increased a lot from the previous generation. That’s new. If you can’t do the math and see that, I don’t know what else to say.
The 20x0 cards may have fallen short on traditional performance expectations, but at the same time nobody was expecting real-time ray-tracing capabilities. Nvidia bet heavily on ray-tracing for this generation. I still think ray tracing isn’t quite ready for prime time, but Nvidia wasn’t punished nearly as hard as they might have been if AMD had been more competitive.

Yes, that is exactly right. Nvidia took a huge risk, lost, and then AMD failed to take advantage and punish them for it.
I’m still loving my 2080 Ti a year later y’all. Just saying.
Glad it’s working well for you! I can’t bring myself to pay that much for a card, but if you want the fastest GPU then it’s really the only option.
That’s fair. I saved for ages to invest in a PC i wouldn’t have to upgrade for years.

No one is saying it performs poorly. The price was outrageous and still isn’t great. I mean you can only compare it to the outrageous price it released at to even say it’s an okay price now.
I mean if you don’t care about price at all, none of this matters. They created a huge price jump for this gen and then pointed to ray-tracing. It’s not as if we’re even talking about the best price per performance anyway because those are going to be, what are they now, the 1660ti or something in thre… the ones that are the most dominant on like the Steam hardware polls. We’re talking about premium cards here but not the dream machine, 16k pc type cards
Same here! I went from a 970 to a 2060 to a 2080 Ti, and while I did like the 2060, this thing performs on a whole other level and actually lets me use my 4k screen properly.
Hah yeah, I went from a 770 straight to a 2080 Ti which is why I might be in such awe of the thing.

The thing is that there have been no games that made RTX worthwhile until Control and in the non-RTX games the performance delta over non-RTX games was barely moving the needle. Certainly nothing that made the price delta (50-100% difference) worth it
