Yea, hardware transcoding would be nice for running Twitch etc, but the impression I am left with on my 1070 is that the NV3ENC? Codec is shit image quality so I’m better of using CPU at 6k bitrate and medium cpu profile.
Guess the 3000s not out anytime soon tho?
I think I ran it at 1k hz a while back where there was no problem and it wouldn’t surprise me if it was related to a Windows update. I couldn’t find anything about it when I did the google for my problem, but I think there was one thread talking about something related to it and also a windows device ‘high precision event timer’ i think it was… but I recall reading some threads about setting your mouse hz high to match framerate in terms of input latency or something so it might’ve been there.
I found a thread now, now that I know it was the mouse issue, but when I just googled for “low fps with nvidia” etc… combinations, I couldn’t find anything.

So AMD released the 5600XT, which essentially killed the 1660ti, offering 10% better performance at the same $279 price. However the 1660ti was already dead, because the 1660S was only 5% slower at $229. But AMD won at that $279 price point, with a 15% gain over the 1660S for $50.
Then just today, EVGA is releasing the “2060 KO”, which is essentially a 2060 non-S for $299. Nvidia will probably cut 2060 prices to $299 across the board, but that isn’t confirmed yet. Anyway the 2060 non-S should be around 3-7% faster than the 5600XT, depending on game and resolution, and you also get ray-tracing for your $30.
Ugh. I just want something that’s faster than my 1070 Founder’s Edition, that doesn’t cost a bajillion dollars and that will let me use Control’s ray tracing. Still doesn’t seem to exist.

Sure doesn’t. I’m in the same boat with my 1080. I may have to skip the 30-series as well if Nvidia continues with their current pricing trends.
The industry is too mature and smart to bump the performance per dollar more than a bit:
nVidia: we have a new high-end card with 80% more performance for 79% more money!
ATI: oh yea, well here’s a card that 20% slower than the card you just released, for 21% less money. A better deal!
nVidia: I can do better than that, here’s one that’s 7% faster than that card, for 6% more money!
ATI: hmm. Here’s one that’s 50% slower but actually just less than half the cost!

Sure it does. The 2060S is a solid ~30% faster than your 1070, will ray-trace just fine at 1080p, and costs $399.
Now whether you think it’s worthwhile upgrading for a meager 30% performance bump is another thing entirely. But if you really want ray-tracing you can do it.
Unfortunately, I have a 1440p monitor and my eyes are weirdly sensitive to screens running at non-native resolutions.

Lots of games offer resolution scaling, you would just run at 66% resolution for the same effect. Other games have dynamic resolution support, where they drop the internal resolution to meet a framerate target, that’s even better.

I still won’t touch AMD GPUs because of their bad drivers.

I’ve also had far more weird issues with particular games whenever I’ve owned an ATI (now AMD) card, like at a 10 or 20 to 1 ratio. The second and last time I came back to ATI after being assured their issues were worked out was when I bought the 4870 [EDIT: Actually, I take that back, that was my first bad experience. My last card from them was the r280 or whatever it was called, which I also had a bunch of problems with]. I remember the one Friday I came home after a brutal week of work, just wanting to sit back and relax and play games for a few hours before I had to head back to work Saturday morning. The game I was trying to play was a horrible stuttery mess and it was a known issue with ATI cards. After a couple hours of fruitless troubleshooting, I ripped the card out, drove down to Best Buy (something I’d never normally do, which is how I know how frustrated I was), and bought an 8800-series at an inflated brick and mortar price tag. Worked immediately, performance was great. Haven’t looked back.
Nvidia has stopped me from upgrading this generation due to their insane prices, but it’d take a miracle card for me to go back to AMD, as much as I want them to succeed. I know it’s just anecdotal and others have nothing but good things to say, but both my experiences with AMD cards has been miserable and nothing but nagging problem after nagging problem.
We’ll see, though. If AMD can ever start competing with the **80 level cards, Nvidia’s at least unlocked the door with their pricing. It’d have to be one smoking good deal, though.

My last AMD card was the 5850, which was a legendarily great GPU. I would happily buy AMD if their price/performance was right.

I used to always buy AMD processors and ATI cards – and I’ve still got an AMD processor – but this last time I built (which has been ages, and it’s about time again) I decided to go with nVidia, because the price difference wasn’t THAT steep, and I figure that most devs are making the games on nVidia, so it’s just easier.
Probably gonna start buying parts in the next couple of months for a new PC, so glad to see new GPUs are on the horizon. That always means prices are about to jump around.

I used to be such an AMD fan when it came to CPUs. I friggin’ loved my Athlon back in the day. Intel has just been absolutely murdering them for years so it makes me really happy to see them get back into the game with their past couple CPUs.

I loved the crossfire 4850s I had, but they need to work their magic again before I’d switch back from Nvidia at this point.
I do plan on building a ryzen based system soon though as my current system is starting to show its age.

I remain largely indifferent between AMD / ATI and their competitors. I will switch based on performance and price at that particular moment when I am looking to buy something. Having said that, someone needs to lose teeth for their mouse cursor bug that keeps showing up.

I would like a generation of cards with the exact same performance characteristics as the latest and greatest cards.
Except quieter and cooler.

LOL! I just had this image of a reasonably affluent, well educated and dressed lady walking out of her Tesla model 3 to a scruffy software dev’s apartment, ringing the doorbell, donning a knuckleduster while the dude rummages with his lock and then punching him with a hard straight right in the kisser when the door opens.

Haha. It is one of the most obnoxious bugs I’ve ever encountered, and it been going on for years, for years!
It’s rather ridiculous that ATI/AMD are so terrible at PC graphics since they’re what’s in current consoles. Like, how can you be so bad at PC when everyone’s using a variation of your stuff for development?
Makes you wonder what a PS5 or Xbox Series X built on NVIDIA hardware would be like? Performance in a restricted sandbox like that might be through the roof compared to what they’re getting from ATI/AMD.
Obviously NVIDIA did ok with the Switch.
My 4850 was a great card. Had that bad boy for years until finally the shitty airflow in the case and the (godawful loud, lol) stock cooler did the inevitable.
