You don’t even need to upgrade or replace the current GPU. You’d be spending $300 for the same performance.

Yeah, use the same card and wait if you can.

Well sure, but I assumed his kid needed a GPU too.
Kids get integrated graphics.

Not if you…you know…like them.

Maybe the 1650/1660 if you can get good prices on them as RTX is still a huge bust.

Kids get hand me downs. When a worthwhile card comes out, then that 1080ti gets handed down. It’s a great card even today, and the new cards aren’t even that far away right? Heck maybe the current so-so will hit a reasonable price then too.

I’m all about hand-me-down cards. But integrated graphics? Eesh.
I was mostly joking. My niece primarily plays Roblox, and I’d have a hard time handing over my 1080 to her for that, even if I was building a new machine.

Ah fair enough. My girls went through a Roblox phase, and you’re totally right there.
My 12-year-old is starting to get into some more…I dunno, “real” games – mostly courtesy of her Xbox – and has been talking about wanting a gaming PC.
Right now, she still spends just a little too much time on Fortnite. ;-)
I recently upgraded my kid from a 750ti to a 1060.
He didn’t notice.

Is Minesweeper the only game you let him play?

Minecraft has no need for a powerful GPU.
I assume that Minesweeper needs non-trivial 3D acceleration to be able to properly serve its ad stream nowadays.

I was just about ready to buy a 5700 xt (over the 2060 super / 2070), when all this doom and gloom talk about AMD drivers being horrible gave me pause. Are they really that bad? Or is it just a cosmetic / alliance thing?
They’re fine, we have a lot of naysayers here is all.

I’ve frequently had problems with the drivers themselves or new games having a weird issue with my AMD cards that took patches or driver updates to fix. I don’t know how many times I’d be struggling with an issue, go the forums and see a “AMD users click here” stickied post.
The last time that happened to me was my RTX 280 or whatever the model is which led to a feedback loop of frustration as game issues led to mucking more with drivers which led to battling driver problems, either the driver itself or the Catalyst Control Center. I was assured in the RTX 280 days that “bad AMD driver” stuff I dealt with with the 4870 was long gone, but it wasn’t the case for me.
All that being said, that’s just my own personal experience and why I’m hesitant to go AMD again, but I don’t confuse anecdote with data. Plenty of other people haven’t had issues, it’s just for me personally I would need AMD to be a clear winner before grabbing another one of their cards. Either a really good price or performance that beat Nvidia at the high end.
NVIDIA’s stuff is just plain better, and it’s partially down to drivers. Consider… AMD makes hardware for two game consoles and PCs. NVIDIA pushes the limits of what a GPU is and what it can do.
You’d think that AMD would have great stability and support given they’re always behind hardware-wise, seemingly serving a cost conscious and lower expectation group of customers where things should just work. Yet NVIDIA’s drivers are always top notch, available day and date with brand new games, and their support more consistent and stability unmatched. It sure makes you wonder where all that money goes at AMD… because it sure seems like it isn’t being paid to the people writing the drivers.

There is a lot of talk about Navi drivers in particular being problematic right now, yeah.

Anecdotal, I know:
I do not like that AMD’s cards are longer, louder and hotter. Draw more power.
NVIDIA’s drivers are not perfect: I’ve had things like aspect ratio scaling and certain games support break in between minor revisions.
I last had AMD with a pair of 7950s and the best thing about it was the third-party RadeonPro utility.
