Old-style driver-dependent multi-GPU is basically dead these days. Theoretically DX12 has a multi-GPU solution but nobody really supports it.
Yes, assuming we don’t all die, Nvidia will release the 30-series eventually.
Kind of on limbo for the time being. My comp is 6yo now (2500k/1070 FE added later). I’d been planning to build a new comp (3700/2070) in the spring before Cyberpunk released. Ofc, Cyberpunk was delayed then the pandemic hit. So, I’m just waiting to see what happens. Think I will end up waiting for the 30 series even if the game comes out first at this point, unless it’s going to be 6 months or something.

My 6700K computer with a 1080 is 4 years old. I really don’t see any reason to upgrade the CPU/motherboard/etc. Recently got a 2TB TLC NVME SSD so I’m good there too. Just want a new GPU-- and not even for today, but because next-gen consoles will have ray-tracing.

Zen3 is also expected later summer or fall right? Potentially might be a good time then
Yeah, that’s nice, but I’m definitely in need of a mobo change. Also, I built in a massive Silverstone Ft-02 case and want to make something waaay smaller this time, like mini-ITX. The case I was looking at was 16L vs 65.

I really don’t see what I would need more CPU juice for.
Misguided has a positively ancient CPU, he has a strong case for upgrading. I don’t.
Small cases are a pain in the ass to work in and have inferior cooling, so they’re often louder. I wouldn’t go smaller than a mid-tower unless it’s a hobby thing or you need to put it under your TV or something.
Heh, it was already aging when I built that system. Still rock solid, though, after all this time.
Yeah, I know. I did spend considerable time planning components and such. Cooling shouldn’t be an issue with top-mounted Kraken x62 280mm radiator and 2x140mm fans on the bottom.

Is it official that the next gen is 30xx rather than 21xx?
I have an i5-6600K and games like Assassin’s Creed just crush it. I need more cores. I have a 1080ti and am totally CPU bottlenecked.
And there’s no way I’m shutting down those 50 Chrome tabs every time I want to play a game.

Don’t get your hopes up, GTC typically announces the architecture, not the consumer-level CPUs. Expect a dashing leather-jacket clad asian man to beam like a 16-wheeler’s headlights while holding a chip up in his hands and soliloquizing about how Nvidia is revolutionizing datacenters, AI, and self-driving cars. We’ll hear about the architectural changes in Ampere but nothing about how the 30-series will perform or cost.
Nvidia usually announces consumer GPUs in the fall, think August.

Not as far as I know. From a marketing POV going from 2000->2100 sounds like small potatoes. 2000->3000 is a GENERATIONAL LEAP!!!1

Maybe it will be the RTX 20x0 Extraordinary Series.

I think it should be the RTX 2080 Super Duper.
They have to be consistently stupid with the 15XX naming methodology they have taken.

You can’t hail it as a generational leap if isn’t really, so 20xx works. If it goes to 30xx when it is only a minor upgrade from 20xx, there is a risk that people will simply call Nvidia BS and stop buying. As it is, with this whole plague thing I’m kind of happy spending as little as possible on expensive hardware.

The 20 series was a sidegrade from the 10 other than the $1200 2080ti, so Nvidia clearly doesn’t give a shit about that.
Rumors are that the 3080 will be the 2080ti+10%, which is actually better than I expected.
The 20 series as a sidegrade kind of makes sense with the move to ray tracing, but seems like the next set should be a more significant performance improvement, no?
Just want to ask if the 10% improvement is for RT?
If it’s for RT, then it does not bode well for the RT tech. Most 2nd generation game changing techs performance boosts are in the 100%'s ranges, are they rushing an unready product for launch or is it more like RT cannot achieve much improvements with our current understanding of the math involved?
