“Next Gen” doesn’t always equate a better experience or visuals, just look at windows 10 or the surveilance state :-)
If the implementation of raytracing in a title makes things look better, then yes, I want it. If it just a gimmick/checkbox feature that offers no visual improvements but trashes performance, then no. And of course it must be implemented sensibly in a title I want to play, If Pony Bro’s has the best RT implementation known to man, I doubt I would get a RT card just for that.
Strangely Minecraft and Quake 2 were the the titles people seemed to love the RTX in. I’m not sure how much of an effect it had in Metro, Tomb Raider or Battlefield. Anyone try them?

Yes it definitely looks better, in a subtle way. Everything looks right.
Minecraft and quake are old ugly games so current gpus are fast enough for global illumination. Modern games need to pick and choose which RT features they’ll use and what quality levels are playable. Rumors say Ampere RT performance is much better.
And Control, which I think is the current premiere big-budget example where ray tracing makes a night and day difference.
And let’s not forget you can ignore ray tracing and have DLSS near double your frame rates at high res (in supported games).
Oh yes, forgot Control. I think the only thing you have to upgrade for is speed, then you get whatever image enhancements have become available pretty much for free :)
RTX was a must have for Control imho.
Barely noticeable in Shadow of the Tomb Raider , and Battlefield 5. I haven’t had time to play Metro Exodus yet.
Not a lot of reflective surfaces in Metro, but the lighting is way better/more accurate with RTX on.
However, if I where shown random scenes and asked to say whether RTX was on or off, I’m not sure I could. :)
Upon further research, the 3090 appears to be 310 mm which should actually fit in my case. I might need to upgrade my 700 Watt PSU though…
Did anyone here actually buy a Titan from the 10/20 generations? The highest ‘ti’ has always been my limit, and I think it’ll be the same this time too.

Not I. My impression was that the last couple of generations of Titan were really geared for scientific applications over gaming (and even dropped the GeForce branding).
I’ve generally gone with an x70 or equivalent every few generations. The 2080 Ti was the first time I’ve gone above that.
Right, so the 3090 seems to be bringing Titan back to gaming. Tempted this time?
It looks insane. Hopefully the 3080ti is a little more sensible…
It might be tempting this time because of RTX+regular performance combination, there might actually be a need for it. If it can do gorgeous ray traced scenes at decent frame rates at a good resolution, while the lower cards can’t, it will look like a different value proposition than the Titan, which might have just given you a few frames a second extra when you already had more frames than you needed.
But what if the 3090 is like $2k. :P
Yeah I am certain the relative pricing with 3080ti and 3090 will be just like 2080ti and Titan RTX…
Not such a great value proposition! But we’ll see. :)

I’ll see where the price/performance lands, but really doubting it. The 2080 Ti already felt like a crazy extravagance to me when I bought it. I got most of the purchase price back a few weeks ago, and don’t mind putting in a bit more on top of it, but don’t see the value at the rumored $2,000.

Going by various rumors, the 3080ti (or perhaps Super) will be a refresh in 2021 using TSMC’s 7nm process, and roughly 30% faster while using a lot less power. We’ll know more in a week!
While the shadows in games like Metro are subtle, they really do make the world look more immersive. Non-RT lighting looks markedly less real. You don’t necessarily notice this at a glance, but it does greatly aid immersion.
Ambient occlusion is probably my favorite graphical fidelity improvement in the last decade, so if RTX provides the same impact, I’m certainly interested.
Given the size of that thing and the price of that thing, it might be more effective to just hire actors to stand in front of your computer and act out the game.
Star Citizen stretch goal right here.
Funding at 25.000$ or higher gets access to this tier.

Yes, that’s a great comparison-- ambient occlusion is subtle, but objects and characters somehow look wrong without it.
