You can do a fair bit with 20-series RT performance, once you learn how to limit usage properly. What you can’t do is turn everything on simultaneously. You can’t do shadows, and reflections, and global illumination, etc, all at high resolution. But you can definitely make your game’s world much more immersive.
I know this thread is for the latest and greatest, but it’s also the only real GPU thread that I can find on the first couple of pages.
So what’s the current mainstream card ($250 or less, preferably nVidia, 4GB+) for someone who only rarely pushes their video card beyond MMO’s and online board games? I noticed playing Control that things were chugging here and there on my 1050 (2GB, non-Ti) and I’d like to upgrade my card and see if I can get a couple more years out of this ratty old PC.
A 2060 is my best guess. But they’re $350. So my best guess is not great.
MMOs/Board games <> Control. Unless there’s some other thing called Control that isn’t the recent RTX showcase?
Seems like you have to choose one or the other :)
Wait and see if they show a 3060 or 3050, I guess.

Don’t buy anything right now. Both AMD and Nvidia are about to release new stuff.
But to answer your question, probably a 1650 super.
So no need to get a new PSU if the current one can handle the wattage requirements
I saw that too! Now just to wait and see what kind of wattage the regular ol’ 3080 will need.
(All the talk about the insane wattage requirements are just for the 3090, right?)
Well, like I said: I mostly play games that don’t require much video processing power, but every now and then a game comes along that I really want to play. I only play on a 1080p monitor and I don’t care about everything being pegged to Ultra…I just hate chug. The 1050 has been mostly fine for a few years, but I’ve definitely noticed some chug in games like Control or Remnant, even on Medium.
Thanks @stusser…the 1650 Super looks right about where I want to be. Cheap, and will get me through to a full new computer in a couple of years.
I humbly submit the most useless image ever -
Someone got paid for that!

I did say not to buy anything right now, but do what you need to do.
I don’t think it’s useless at all, but ok. This is how design work starts
They design video cards based off of sketches? You sure about that?
Everything in the engineering world starts with sketches. Hell, movies are story boarded with sketches before filming.
No idea what that’s supposed to meme.
That you’d compare a video card to a movie has rendered me speechless.
Somebody should tell the poor engineer that drew those sketches that they are wasting their time and things aren’t designed that way.
