Is the deal that 3080’s will go on sale on the 17th, but no orders for the 3090’s until the 24th? I know the 3090’s ship later, but I just realized that the 17th seems to be exclusively about the 3080 launch.
The 3080’s will run out of stock within the first hour of the 17th. And you are correct the 3090’s go up for sale on the 24th.

I love this product. I hate this launch.
And it looks like miners are taking a liking to the 3080, so, it’ll be rough.

Wasn’t enough to have 3090, 3080, 3070 and 3060, they’d also need to have 3 different versions for each?
Couldn’t there been a 3910, 3930, 3950 or something instead. When you order a 3070 do you remember if it was “normal”, “Starter”, “limited”, “TI”, “Super”, and whatever the fuck the different manufacturers will call them as well, ASUS Geforce 39700 STRIX TI Super Ultimate Edition" which is actually a Normal that they SUPERED up, not the Geforce TI that got Supered.

I’m hearing rumblings about a possible Big Navi reveal today. I’m starting to get twitchy in anticipation. Been waiting roughly 6 months for a new pc build. First for a check to come in and now for all this new gear getting released. Was totally going to go ahead and order something next week or 2 but now am thinking of waiting another month or 2 instead for new amd GPU and CPU. Not sure I can hold out! Need a distraction.
I’m hoping if AMD reveals some amazing cards today that have a release date just around the corner it might make it a little easier to secure a 3xxx card.

I’d be surprised if AMD reveals today rather than waiting until the 15th or 16th, but nobody ever accused them of being savvy marketers.
3080s and 3090s are going to sell out instantly regardless on day one, but it may help in the coming weeks.
The AMD reddit is going crazy after AMD’s marketing chief tweeted this
If AMD liked what they saw out of Nvidia last week, then, yeah, move now. Take the wind out of Nvidia’s sails before it even gets started. With such limited availability for Nvidia boards, it’s going to create a lot of frustrated buyers.

Yep, would make total sense to release info now if your cards are comparable. I got a feeling they will be and they wont have shortages like Nvidia. This could be a helluva close to the year for AMD. Those 4000 series cups could be awfully sweet as well. I may have to buy more AMD stock. I cashed out last week to help fund my new PC.

No, it really wouldn’t. The smartest time to reveal would be on the 15th or 16th. Nvidia embargo opens and reviews will post on the 14th, and Nvidia orders open on the 17th.
Only justification to release info on the 9th is if they’re going to start shipping next week too.
Can you elaborate on this? Why would it be smarter to wait on reveals until next week?
Also, what if AMD plans to open up (gasp) pre-orders today, as well? That would be a good move on their part, I’d imagine.

Due to the timings i mentioned in my post.
You realize I had to ask because your original explanation didn’t do the trick, right? Can you explain why the timings you mentioned mean it is smarter to wait until next week? Why does it matter? I was hoping that would be clear when I asked you to elaborate, sorry if I’m being confusing.
Are video cards like books? I heard from Al Franken that book publishers say never go out to talk shows and other places to promote your book unless customers can get it or pre-order it already, right after seeing your segment. Don’t talk about a book that’s going to come out a month or two from now that they can’t get yet.

I’ll tell you why I think it might make sense to release now.
Basically this generation looks like to have 3 factors for buyers:
- performance
- price
- power consumption
The last one is more of a factor than ever thanks to these new Nvidia power hungry monsters. Let’s say based on what we’ve seen on Nvidia and what AMD knows (i’d assume more than the public)they know they got them beat on 2 out of the above 3 and are real close on the other. Let’s say AMD’s cost 10%-15% less, uses 15% - 20% less power and are within 5% - 10% of performance. Announcing that now will make people think twice who are planning or in the process of upgrading power supplies in anticipation of an 3070 or 3080… There are plenty in this very thread. Add alittle cheaper plus no need for new power supply and that makes a lot of sense for some folks. Now if they have more available at launch than Nvidia on top of this and it could be perfect storm.

No, no they are not like books at all.
I wonder if the Microsoft XSX and XSS announcements was the big deal the AMD marketing guy was excited about?
I’m not in the PC hardware or movie industry, but it seems like Nvidia is treating the 3xxx series almost like an upcoming film and doing all they can to make 9/17 into an event. I can only imagine film studios and PR firms have perfected this technique to maximize sales around a limited window. This makes sense in lots of ways for Nvidia to do.
However, video cards aren’t films. When a second film you’re interested in comes out around the same time, you can see both. So if AMD has a successful announcement and entices people to cool their jets on Ampere a wee bit, Nvidia stands to lose some market share and momentum.
All that said, I expect the Ampere cards to sell out quick. The only question is how many people will be waiting for the next shipment vs. moving on to the next flashy thing in RDNA2

The Annie tweet probably just refers to another fluff Fortnite Easter egg.
Meanwhile, a possible early 3080 benchmark leak shows a 25-30% increase over the 2080 Ti.
