It’s roughly 60-80% faster than the 2080 non-Super, depending on the game, apples to apples. Nvidia claimed it was twice as fast but early benchmarks don’t agree.

mien leiben!

Yes, but remember, the 2080 non-Super was barely faster than the 1080ti and cost the same amount. It’s been 3.5 years since the 1080ti released.

So wasn’t the jump from the 1080 to the 2080 , like 35% improvement? (non-TI cards)

Just trying to figure out my performance gains over the generations.

1080>2080>3080.

Yeah, 1080->2080 was like 30%. But 1080->1080ti was also like 30%.

Traditionally, the x70 is roughly equivalent to the x80ti of the previous generation. 1070=980ti, 970=780ti. But the 2070=1080, not the 1080ti. Nvidia shifted the entire generation up one tier, and increased prices too.

Then the x80 is roughly equivalent to the x80ti of the previous generation +20-30% or so. Again the 2080 didn’t do that, but the 1080 and 980 did.

The 30-series is a return to that norm.

2nd gen RTX cores are beasts!

CUDA and OpenCL have nothing to do with RTX cores, they run on the CUDA cores, which handle INT32, FP32, etc. Some can also run on the tensor cores. But not the RTX ones, those are pretty much just used for ray-tracing.

Note these performance metrics don’t directly translate to gaming, that stuff is used for high-performance computing primarily.

Stockpiles really must be super tight, Microcenter won’t be getting any founders cards on launch day.

See this yet? Might be perfect for you because it is a bit smaller and designed for larger air coolers

I expect supplies to be tight, but I don’t recall anyone outside of Nvidia, except maybe Bestbuy, offering FE cards on release day for the last generation. Microcenter will have AIB cards.

I’m going to stay home and try to get an order in online next Thurs. If I manage to get a card online in the first hour, I may take a 14 minute drive to the local Microcenter and see what the deal is for in-person inventory. If I can get a card in hand locally on launch day, I’ll just cancel the online order (or sell it).

B&H photo has a few cards listed finally.

Well, it remains to be seen if the 3070 is actually equivalent to the 2080ti. Given that the 3080 is less revolutionary than the initial hype suggested, would that be less likely to be true now?

I am actually really disappointed by these numbers. It would have been fine if the power draw was the same as the 2080ti, but the fact that the power draw has increased by a similar percentage as the fps just makes it seem worthless to me.

Nah, I have little doubt that it will.

Agree on power usage.

I followed your link out to B&H Photo and searched for 3090 and discovered that there are some people with hobbies that make ours look cheap (I suppose the products could be there for professionals instead, but yikes). Here’s one of the 3090 search results — makes a rtx 3090 look very cheap in comparison:

I did see that, although I already pulled the trigger on the smaller SM560. It’s size looks perfect, and I’d really like to have this rig running (sans GPU) by late-September. I’ll be fine using integrated graphics until there are some tests of which RTX 30x0 variants manage heat decently in sandwich cases.

The new Cerberus Mini looks like a good option, if you can wait.

So Nvidia has made a big deal about their fancy two-sided cooling solution. But I notice all of the other brands’ cards have more or less traditional one-sided fan blocks. I’m guessing we’ll know a little more when we start getting reviews, but is there any reason to think the Founder’s Edition would run cooler than the aftermarket cards?

No, but it will be less reliant on case airflow as assumedly half of the heat will be immediately exhausted out the back of the card. But really we need testing to see if the new cooler is worthwhile, and that’ll come on Monday.

One thing’s for sure, it looks awesome. Love Nvidia’s industrial design. Very clean.

Newegg now has listings
edit - but no prices

Many of those cards do have holes in the backplate pcb, though, to pad air through to the opposite side, even if the fans are on the front

I don’t believe they do, actually. I haven’t seen any that do, at any rate.
