The power consumption increase seems more or less in line with the performance increase. Whither went the process shrink benefits, then?

Also: having 2 threads about this is annoying. But then again not, in a “fries at the bottom of the bag” sort of way.

Nvidia had to settle for Samsung’s 8nm node, which simply isn’t as good as TSMC, particularly at energy consumption. The results are in line with what MLID was predicting.

Various reviews have power per watt figures. It compares very well to other cards, albeit not out out of the ordinary.

Yes, it is much more efficient than previous generations, and they used all those efficiency gains for raw brute force.

The stock cooler design is not well suited to small form factor cases. At least a few AIB are.

I saw that MSI is going to be coming out with a Corsair line that’s water cooled for both the 3080 and 3090. No clue on pricing, of course.

What’s the story with AIB card reviews? Are those embargoed until all of the 3080 FE’s are sold out?

The same with higher power requirement. Does this exclude this new series from gaming laptops?

Isn’t that a given until they make some special chips? I thought there are usually different models for laptops? 20xx MX ?

It is but one or the other is addressable. Both … well that just delays designs until they can figure out how to handle that on a laptop.

If you cut your market to just a sub-section that can have heavy active cooling/higher power in a desktop, has your new design really accomplished much?

Basically, yeah; I think it’s 9AM ET on the 17th for those

Ugh, that’s about as lame as it gets. Isn’t that exactly when AIB cards are available for sale, too? If you’re going to be scummy about it, at least delay AIB sales until a day or two later so everyone that isn’t going FE can make an informed decision about the rest of the field…

Agreed. For what it’s worth, there are lines at the stores near me so I would advise trying online instead of an early morning run for any early adopters. I briefly thought about it, but the higher-end AIB cards aren’t going to be available tomorrow and I don’t even have a proper build to put the card in, yet, so I’m waiting for the next round of inventory.

I’m guessing the first 100,000 or so retail cards will be snapped up by bots operated by idiots who will immediately turn them around on eBay.

Appreciate the advice, I’m like minded. I’m building a system from scratch and only half the parts have arrived, case yet to arrive. It’s small form factor, so I also need clarity on compatible exhaust design among AIB cards and power draw before I’ll commit.

If there was positive news on those fronts for 3080 FE I’d be eager to snap one up, but so far it’s ambiguous so I’m waiting to either see how the AIB cards rate or for the 3070 or AMD. I don’t expect to upgrade again for years, so a month or two won’t make much difference. Until then it’s just me and my potato work laptop, and then a good desktop setup with only an iGPU - which will feel like a major upgrade at this point before the real one!

It’s 17th and 9am Eastern and Nvidia page is still showing “Notify Me” :(

sold out worldwide in 15 seconds supposedly…Paper Launch.

What a cluster fuck!

Never became available in .nl  I would have liked to have a founders ed. in my box, but now Ill just hold on to my shekels for a bit, see how it shakes out.

So a paper launch and over-hyped claims. I guess Nvidia is doing a better job at marketing AMD cards than AMD has.
