It’s graphene, not plastic.

I couldn’t get through checkout with the MSI card either. Who knows how many people succeeded.
This is fucking ridiculous.
I’ll try out this cool Star Wars demo, I assume the 3080 can crush this.
Found this in a review, so you are right. Don’t care, personally. Reviews of that card have been quite positive.
MSI is marketing their backplate as being made of “graphene”, which has amazing thermal properties, making it a great, but expensive choice for a backplate material. I tested this claim, and it turns out the backplate is actually plastic with coated graphite. While it transfers heat just fine, it’s not nearly as efficient as graphene for that task. Making a graphene backplate on a consumer product would be too expensive anyway. In my opinion, this isn’t a big deal as the backplate mostly serves to protect components and improve product looks—cooling is the job of the main heatsink, not the backplate. Generally, a backplate brings down temperatures by maybe a degree or two, nothing worth worrying about.

Right, I came close to buying it. But I mean, it’s over seven hundred dollars. Hook a brother up with some aluminium. Not aluminum, if I’m spending $700 I want the Jony Ive British pronunciation.
Edit: MSI is baaaaaack, y’all. Taunting me.

Got a shipping notification that my new i8-850k/3080 machine should arrive tomorrow. After a brief happy dance I am now faced with making a decision on a monitor. I’m torn between a 16:9 4k and a big curved widescreen 1440p.

Depends on what you play. If you’re into simulations at all, the ultrawidescreen is fantastic because of the extra immersion of having so much of your FOV filled.
Strategy games, 16:9’s a better bet.
I disagree that 16:9 is better for strategy. I think ultra wide dominates in all genres, assuming the specific game supports it (which is widespread now).

I’m more thinking of having more real estate to scan visually, which can add a little more challenge. But you could also argue that’s just additional situational awareness.
I’ve been using an ultrawide for a couple years now and I’m hooked. Better for work, better for games.
At 34 inches, 1440p is enough pixel density that you don’t feel it’s more “blocky” than 2160p.

Wow, that was quick! Keep me posted on build quality etc please.

They look fat on a few I’ve seen. I realize the stores don’t set them up quite right but I was really surprised with the stretch going on with The Despicable Me 3 movie. That 80s flashback guy looked like he gained 50 lbs.

That’s just a misconfiguration. You don’t want to set it to stretch non-ultrawide content to ultrawide.

I have a 34" ultrawide Asus G-Sync. It’s fantastic, and ultrawide 1440p is the sweet spot for pushing eye candy at high frame rates.
That said, if there’s ever an affordable 43" IPS OLED 4k G-Sync w/ a high refresh rate, that would be my next jump. I think that’s the biggest I can go at a desk but I’m pretty good for a few years w/ my current display setup.

I am still amazed , as we near a full week from launch that the stock of cards is pretty much non-existent.
Some places saying no stock till end of year, some places even de-listing cards they did have auto-notifies set up for.

Yeah, I am completely stunned that it came this fast. A little concerned actually. I wasn’t even supposed to be back home until later this week. I had to shuffle work around and make a four hour drive to get home so I can be here to receive it tomorrow. I’m now cramming to get a ton of work done tonight so I will have ample free time to play and benchmark tomorrow. I will of course post some benchmarks once I have them.
I’ve dusted off my CH stick and throttle that have been neglected since the charm of Elite wore off some years ago. I can’t wait to try out MSFS and remind myself how much I suck at realistic civilian flight sims.
Anyone know of a good organization to donate an old gaming PC to? My oldest system, a venerable i7-2600k/gtx770, will be getting retired when the new monster machine arrives.
I am a little unsure of what game you are asking about, maybe I missed it?

Yep. This launch is frustrating & almost absurdly inept. It’d be kinda funny if I didn’t actually want to give NVidia money.
But NVidia seem determined to avoid that $700+ everywhere possible. And so we waste our time wandering web stores and forums, reading social media, chasing bots, and setting up a zillion redundant notifications. All in the hope of getting one or two nibbles per week that miraculously lead to a loaded shopping cart… but then the site overloads or the stock disappears and we’re back to zero… Again.
And so it goes.
