Yeah I did too but then couldn’t check out. The store kept insisting that the card could neither be shipped nor picked up. And then it went out of stock again.
Sigh.

A couple of youtubers got 8K screens from Nvidia to show off 3090s.
Not sure what market there is for 8K 60fps, but it looks like quite a thing :)

88 inch TV at 8K, and he was sitting pretty close, maybe 4-5 feet away from the TV? I always try to picture a person laying down between someone and the TV to judge that distance, given most people are between 5.5 to 6 feet tall.

I think more RTX3080’s were given away to youtubers and reviewers than were actually available for sale this past week.

Bestbuy had 2 different ones pop as available this morning. a PNY and MSI. Got the PNY all the way to the cart before the rug was yanked. Sigh.
Score thus far:
Newegg: 3 in cart
Bestbuy 1 in cart
Amazon: 5 in cart
I am getting really good at adding them to the cart!

Seems the 3070 will not be as good as the 2080ti looking at the chart in that link?

Shows it overlapping with the 2080S and 2080ti, implying it will be somewhere in the middle. If that’s the case, it would be disappointing but still a great value at $499.
Nvidia’s marketing has been generally deceitful this generation. The 3080 is not twice as fast as the 2080 non-Super in the vast majority of games and the second-gen RTX and third-gen tensor cores are not substantially faster at ray-tracing and DLSS. It’s still a great product, but their lies are unfortunate. Historically Nvidia has come closer to the truth, it’s usually AMD who lies like this.
They’re also lying through their teeth about availability. They did not have “plenty” at launch and they simply sold out in seconds. Wendell of Level1Techs is saying your typical Microcenter might get 100 new units at launch normally. They were maybe lucky to get 15 3080s.
I don’t really care about their claims, because I know it beats the shit out of my 1080 and after that, beats the shit out of it some more. DLSS and Ray Tracing is a massive bonus.

Right. It’s kicking my 1070 to the curb, and it’ll pwn at Cyberpunk and all the other shiney new shit that’s going to come in the coming couple years with the new console gen. It’ll also be fast enough to drive my G2 and have me in flightsim nirvana for the forseeable future.
If only I got those things (the 3080 and the G2) delivered I already paid for.

So if I want to play at 2560x1080 with all the fancy stuff turned on, what do I need? For whatever would support that, how boned would I be if I tried to run an Oculus Quest 2 off of it?

So we’re 20 hours away from the 3090 launch and it appears that the 3090 review embargo hasn’t lifted. That’s the video card version of not screening a movie before release…
A 3080 should kick butt quite nicely at 2k. From what I hear from the VR crowd, you may want to wait for either the 20GB version or see what AMD has up their sleeves at the end of October (supply being what it is, you may have to, anyway).

2560 x 1080? That’s ultrawide right?
You don’t really need a 3xxx at all, unless you want very high framerates. A 3070 will eat that up. I don’t know about VR.

You’re right, expected the embargo to lift at 9AM this morning-- even if Pacific time, that’s an hour ago. Curioser and curioser.
At 2560x1080 a 3070 would easily handle everything for the next 5 years. VR, depends on the resolution of the headset.

Smallish increase over 3080 confirmed by Nvidia…
For 4K gaming, the GeForce RTX 3090 is about 10-15% faster on average than the GeForce RTX 3080, and up to 50% faster than the TITAN RTX.

There were a couple of filthy scalpers local to me in NY/NJ lowballing FE cards at $900. One of them didn’t ever reply to my texts but the other met me and I parted w/ the $900 I sold my 2080Ti for, and have returned home with…
OMG. $900-$1000 was my ‘fuckit, it’s almost nothing out of pocket and I can move on with my life’ price.
