Here are the prices from local retailer in New Zealand. Notice that exchange rate now is about 1 NZD to 0.66 USD. So the cheapest card available, NZ$1500 is about US$ 990. So you folks paying $200 markup from scalpers got it cheap. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

It probably says more about NZ retailers eye-gouging tho.

I’m watching GamersNexus tear down a 3090 and it’s insane how big the thing is compared to a pcb about the size of a page from a paperback.

Edit: That’s an interesting comment from Igor above. All the frustrated people can be grateful they’re not early adopters now, if it bears out.

That is an interesting bit of technical detective work, yes! That said, these cards are only actually rated to boost to like 1800 Mhz max and will only boost to 1900Mhz or so on their own normally so it only impacts overclocking-- and they won’t hit anywhere near 2Ghz without great cooling.

Wasn’t there a list somewhere off the various AIB cards including slot widths? Trying to figure out which 3070s to consider.

Cue a total absence of surprise from the QT3 experts.

I’ve never had any issues with Zotac GPUs.

Yeah, my 980 Ti is a Zotac. No issues. It’s been great. Granted, I always stick to my rule of ā€œnever upgrade your drivers until you’re absolutely 100% forced to do soā€, so maybe that’s why I always have such good luck with video cards. I believe it was Gears 5 that last forced me to upgrade them, so they’re not THAT old.

Edit: Oh yes, and never overclock anything.

Wise rule, although I also go by…are you having a problem with a game that seems it could be the GPU… is also a reason to upgrade. I’ll let the benchmarkers and reviewers and whoever those folks are online making a living talking about graphics to test for me.

There was a post on Reddit on this topic that I thought was interesting. I don’t have the background to vet what he’s saying.

He goes into detail about both.

The takeaway here seems to be some AIB’s are using capacitors that are a little cheaper to cut some costs, but the overall solution seems to be reducing by even just 15Mhz the cards power (through like MSI Afterburner, setting it to like 95% or so) and you’d still get the advertised speeds, just a little less on the boost - these cards are so potent I don’t think that would matter. It’s the reverse how how I jacked up my card through over clocking by giving it 7% more power and +120Mhz on the core clock and gained … like 1% more score in Time Spy. Instead it would be 1% less score but your card is stable again.

Jay thinks it’s more likely these manufacturers pout out a firmware that reduces the speeds that way to reduce instability, vs. retooling with higher end capacitors, given one option costs them nothing. That seems likely. It’s could be why Zotac reduced their card performance over the reference board - maybe they knew about this in their internal testing and headed this one off.

I haven’t myself had any issues, hell I even over clocked my card last night and played some stuff without issue, but it seems like it might come down to bad luck if your card is running into an issue. No idea at this point how widespread it might be, and the lack of supply isn’t helping matters.

For what it’s worth my old Zotac GTX 970 developed a crashing problem and I had to RMA it. They sent me a replacement which worked fine.

As far as I’m concerned, customer support is the most important thing. I’ve had to RMA EVGA products as well, but I don’t really mind because their customer support is first class, which is why I lean towards them whenever I’m buying new hardware. I have to say I’m liking the look of the ASUS card, though, so if I have an opportunity to buy one of those I will definitely jump on it.

ASUS, although known for being a top motherboard/component brand, has terrible RMA/customer service in my experience with their GPUs, motherboards and a ZenBook laptop.

wow, so boost clocks are gonna have to be lowered probably on most AIB cards that went cheap on them power chips.

Seems from the various teardowns I’ve seen that ASUS are the only ones to have 6 of the better power capacitors(?) on their cards.

See here for the back of the Asus Tuf 3080

This is why i stopped using their mobos. I’ve heard the same thing. I’ve not heard bad things about Zotac’s customer service, just that they cut corners a lot on their products. The reviews cover these shortcomings pretty often. I’ve heard MSI has shit service too.

The only one that keeps coming up as good is EVGA, and I have used them before. Years ago, they walked me through a problem without blinking an eye and even gave some tips because it was my first big build. They’re just so… expensive, but I do have their GPU and PSU in this build.

The two asus mobos I had were both great. I ended up with a third for my new build after having decided on msi then reading about some design flaws with that board. Hopefully this one will also be great, since there are only so many options in the itx space. I liked the gigabyte board, but the lack of usb-c internal header was a real bummer.

The thing with Brands is kind of like car insurance. I like my car insurance just fine… but I’ve never had to make a claim, so I don’t recommend it to anyone until I go through that process.

I used Asus for 2-3 builds, never had a problem. EVGA, same thing. I even used a Gigabyte board. The thing is though, as my builds became more expensive, I start asking myself what if I this thing that runs a little hot has to be returned, have to RMA… then I start caring more.

For a video card, there are a few brands I like, although I still review specific models, and some I won’t touch. But that also comes with resources and time. I’m not an hurry, and I am not trying save every penny. I suspect the failure rates of the brands that have issues are still very low.

Yeah, I was thinking that as I was replying. That’s why I said I hope the new one is great, since I don’t want to have to deal with a return.

For kicks, I just followed a link from nowinstock discord for a evga ftw 3080at Newegg. They appear to be accepting backorders, but it won’t let me add one to my cart because it has detected I’m using automated software to access the site or some nonsense. Not that I want it anyway, but folks might want to be careful about using links like those.

Edit: now says auto notify instead of add to cart
