Yep. And not even across the same brands / revisions of the same brand. The original Seasonic X-Series had 3 revisions (e.g. SS-650KM to SS-650KM3), with 3rd generation modulars not compatible with the 1st generation (dunno about second gen)

Nice system but have to give the win to Denny with his epileptic inducing rainbow light show.

If your wondering what the heck you would do with all that memory on a 3090…

I believe the expression is ā€œA card in the hand is worth two in the cartā€

Offending post has been eradicated. My apologies.

In this case it probably will cost you twice as much as one in your cart to get one in your hand.

I’m out. I feel so sick I probably can’t even install a GPU right now anyway.

Who cares, though.

I hope it’s nothing bad. Be well mate.

My order is still stuck at ā€œgetting it readyā€ at best buy three days later so who knows when they’ll ship the thing. Maybe they didn’t actually have any in stock.

My Office Depot order has been in ā€œprocessingā€ status for almost two weeks with no update.

Welcome to purgatory!

Edit: woohoo

One system builder in the UK claims to have stock - if you want to buy a new system.

Looks like they got a delivery today.

I am tracking this far too closely, given I’m not likely to buy anything for a while yet, but I kind of got sucked into reading about case thermals and cooling solutions and looking at the various system builders to see what the options are…

I do wonder how much of the 3080 demand is driven by the fact that if you built a reasonably high end system 3 or so years ago it looks like there’s actually comparatively small gains from replacing the processor(*) - and youve probably got enough RAM - you really can just plug in a 3080 and see a huge gain (assuming your PSU can drive that monster).

(waits for @stusser to explain how I’m wrong :) )

(*: Except for applications that can effectively use more than 4 cores)

It’s certainly driving my demand. I built a system 2 years ago, and for the first time in my life I was able to afford to actually go for the top-end components. None of the other components in the system could be improved by more than a few percentage points with today’s equivalents.

I was planning to skip this generation altogether, but then thanks to people posting here, I realized that it was a great time to sell the 2080 Ti before the 3080 announcement, and did so. So I have the $900 from that already set aside and not needing to be budgeted for, and have been mostly playing 2D games for the time being.

My situation is the mirror of Thraeg’s or maybe the past tense of his? Hell I dunno but this is the first time I have had enough disposal income to consider splurging on a high end rig as that is usually not something I would do. That was driving my demand and made scoring one easier as I could wrap it in a whole new pc. I did try the build my own route but gave up after 2 weeks of refreshing and bot chasing.

My shipment got updated to tomorrow! My daughter is more excited than me as she gets my old system and can finally setup a Minecraft server or somesuch. She’s already dragged my old monitor and speakers up (I went whole hog on this upgrade) to her room.

Sure, CPUs haven’t much improved in 5 years. GPUs have.

Shocking.

Speaking of case thermals, my 10900K in the PC I bought to get my 3080 is idling at 51C. After work I’m going to check that the pump is actually working on the cooler and perhaps reseat/re-paste the heatsink. I also have a Corsair H110i I can replace it with if necessary. But that’s going to necessitate figuring out this bizarre LED controller the fans are plugged into. Pain in the butt.

I’m happy with the package I got for the money for the most part, but really can’t recommend the CyberPowerPC/Best Buy route for most people. If a non-techie got this rig it’d be running at 100C while gaming, and this techie’s gonna have to rebuild the thing anyway. Plus the crapshoot with the possibility of getting that horrible AsRock motherboard.

Just posting so y’all who are still looking will know it’s not all wine and roses for some of us who got cards through alternate methods. :)

Which one? I will be buying pretty soon, once Zen 3 is available.
