My RX 480 is running at about 85-85C on the games I’m playing these days and I feel like it’s on the border of being unstable (had some artifacts a few weekends ago when I was doing a marathon No Man’s Sky session). So yeah, 70C would be awesome.

You may want to check the fan curve. The default fan curve for the 20.4.2 driver went to shits and only max out at ~40% fan speed. It is quiet but also quietly baking inside. That led to some 90C sessions. Luckily I caught it finally (was wondering why it has been so quiet lately).

Thank you for that suggestion! I have to admit I didn’t even know I could adjust the fan curve. But you were right, the curve was set very low. I bumped it up at the temperatures I’ve been seeing and after some tweaking (initially it sounded like my vacuum cleaner was running!) I’ve got it working much cooler when the GPU is around 80° C.

Man, that still seems scary high to me. I played an hour of Control and my GPU was running at 97% almost the entire time (not in cut-scenes or game menus) and I never went above 62°C, with it hovering around 59°C most of the time. I’m in a chilly basement though, I suppose that helps. The ambient temp in here is around 67°F or so.

I’m in the basement too for as much difference that seems to make! But I did look it up when I first reported those temperatures and it appears a normal operating temperature for the 480 is 80° C. I don’t get it either.

If that’s normal I wouldn’t worry about it of course, 480 gonna 480 I suppose, but damn that seems hot to me! Just in general, not even compared to my own card or my last few cards (I don’t think I paid attention to thermals at all until I got my 780GTX back in 2014 or so). But if it works, it works, eh? That’s all that matters.

AMD bragged about their specially engineered high temperature junctions for the 5700 so it could run well over 100 degrees!

CRITICAL NEW INFORMATION FOR 3080 FE OWNERS!

…it has RGB.

As someone that cares not for rgb, that looks cool

Yeah but you can only do it with EVGA’s software and a reboot resets it to white. Bummer.

My current PC is an old case with vents right where the graphics card goes for better cooling.

It turns out when a cat wees through the vents that will kill the graphics card.

Amazingly enough the rest of the machine, except for front USB, still works. The motherboard is pretty random and the PSU is weak and the SSD is small though.
Time to get a new system.

… is your cat okay or just like pissed at you?

I think all house cat emotions vary on a spectrum that stretches from “mildly pissed” all the way to “seriously pissed” with subtle variations in between. So the answer is yes, the cat was pissed.

She loves me but is also evil.

My charitable interpretation is that she saw the stock intel cooler and was aiming for that.

Hmmmm… the cat decides to pee in a very specific part of the house, miraculously only damaging one component of your PC, right when a new line of that same component have come out. It’s a bit sus.

Time for Ampeere!

Hey she took out the front USB header too! :)

We’ve had some trouble with her before this, but mainly she goes after wooden surfaces near my wife as some kind of dominance challenge. I think the problem is now we are both wfh we are in the house but not paying attention to her…

Really I’m just grateful she didn’t go for the £4k work PC(*). That would have been a difficult zoom call to my boss…

(*: Which is probably less powerful than a high end Ryzen gaming rig. Intel workstattion chips and Quadro graphics cards are basically price gouging.)

I’ve heard of vengeful cats before. I’ve only heard of one computer taken out in the war and that person didn’t have a case. It was all just exposed, and kitty was old.

Nice timing though ;-)

When I was a kid, my parents house had a ton of art in it. But the cat liked to pee on this one particular picture. No matter where they moved that picture, he found a way to spray it. We liked to refer to him as an art critic.

You should consider a case without vented sides…
