Apparently I was fairly high in the EVGA mailing list, so base model 3070 otw.

No free shipping unfortunately, extra $16 bucks there.

Nice job on the quick 3070, @fdsaion!

Bought Control for $17 from Epic with my $10 off coupon, because I was curious to see all the 3080 features in action.

DLSS is definitely interesting. Running with every setting including Ray Tracing set to maximum, I was getting about 94 fps at 3440x1440 resolution with DLSS turned on (which rendered at 2283x960), vs 56 fps at 3440x1440 native. I obviously couldn’t compare them directly side-by-side, but swapping back and forth, I couldn’t notice any difference.

The SI have a 3080 in stock for me and have started the build! (Cunningly before the 5000 series comes out and I ask them to change the spec)(*). So only a 10 day wait for the card.

(*: Yeah I know I should have waited, but my gaming PC was ded and I didn’t realise the 5000 release date was so close - and we don’t know what the supply situation is going to be like. And I don’t want to mess the SI around since they are dealing with a pandemic. It’s not like the 3900X is a slow chip. I can take stock in a couple of years and get a 5950X if I want to upgrade. )

Is it my imagination, or does it seem like the new AMD video cards will be much better thank Nvidia for VR due to the increased RAM and their infinity cacheing system?

It will allow you to still use a PCIe SATA card.

I don’t know. I’d think because frame rate is so important and the resolutions are so high, having DLSS could be a big deal.

Outside looking in/all other things being equal, yes. Right now, however, I’d just say they’ve got that potential.

True. The list of supported games is growing and we’ve yet to really hear anything useful from AMD on their “answer” to this. Supposedly something is coming in a month or so, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Of course, if you’re playing a VR game without DLSS support built into it, the associated technology in the Nvidia driver & card won’t do squat. I can only hope more game studios see the push and add support, which in turn will get AMD up off their newly-found laurels to put a Team Red implementation in play.

I’m no expert on this stuff, but I believe Stusser has said the new version of DLSS just works for any game with temporal AA, but not sure how commonly that is used.

It still requires integration, but it’s a lot easier with 2.0 and temporal AA. That’s likely one of the reasons why many newer games are including it.

Are there any VR games with DLSS? I have a vague memory that it’s not even possible

With DLSS SDK 2.1 (which is fairly new), VR is now supported. It wasn’t before.

I was under the impression that the kind of rendering done in flight simulators wouldn’t allow DLSS, but MSFS has temporal AA support, so maybe… That’d certainly be nice, particularly with VR on the HP Reverb G2.

Yeah, as I understand it if a game studio is using temporal AA, they can use the same input for DLSS 2.0 so it can wind up being an either/or situation.

That’s correct, they still need to support it, but if they support TAA it’s really easy.

Man this is just silly. I’ve had computer parts boxed up for over a month waiting for a graphics card. At this point I may just return everything and wait till next year.

I would have done that in Sept if I’d known how bad it would be. I figured a few weeks, not months.

I am thinking I might go full team Red if the Nvidia shortage continues, once I get my new CPU and Mobo later this year. Will wait to see what RAGE mode and Smart access memory actually does for the 6800XT, when in the hands of reviewers. :)

I’ve had many an AMD card in my main rigs over the years. My hesitation is usually with their drivers. I had the RX 480 in the last one (fk mouse bug).

I am usually indifferent between the two. It’s all about price, performance, heat and energy use for me.

The fact AMD is doing so well with their CPUs today AND people are buying those… it’s great. I love two strong competitors in this field.

Hey if anyone happens to get one of the new bundles of Nvidia 3080/3090 cards with Cold War and doesn’t want the key, I’m looking to buy one. I got one of the bundles with Watch Dogs a day before this went live. You need an 80/90 card to redeem it so it is only useful to someone who already has the card before the promotion went live. Anyway, let’s make a deal if this is you!

Pretty happy with the 3080 so far! The second one is going to another Q23er…
