So has NVidia, I just thought it was a feature worth mentioning, since a lot of us probably take it for granted now.

I believe that was a feature of Windows Vista when they changed graphics drivers to run in usermode. Before that, a crashing driver would take down your entire system, so that was a major improvement. So it’s been awhile.

GFE is a dumpster fire but it’s an optional dumpster fire.

AMD drivers on the other hand have always been the fingers crossed minefield of inevitable death for me.

This is a bit long, but it’s a good discussion breaking down AMD’s presentation.

The ShadowPlay codec is really good at recording without any performance so I install GFE and never let it launch or optimize any games.

I just got a google email ad (as in, the sponsored ads at the top of ā€œpromotionsā€) for a 2080 super for Ā£899.

This is crazy. I guess they are hoping people who don’t know what they are doing and cant get a 3070 will get one as a Xmas present for someone?

Lies

Got mine today, gonna sit unused till the rest of Zen3 shows up. Have no desire to deconstruct my ITX setup until then

E: Yeah this thing is a long one. It’ll take up the entire length of the case but should fit. Not going to deal with the headache until full rebuild.

Just for giggles, I looked at Newegg and saw that all of the 3xxx cards are ā€œout of stock.ā€ I’m guessing they will try to get more out for the holiday season? Not that I’m in the market–my 2070 Super is fine for my 1080p set up.

Not gonna lie, this was the worst part of GFE for a while there.

ā€œWe made this thing that’s convenient!ā€
ā€œFinally. I hateā€¦ā€
ā€œIt sometimes forgets your login and you have to login in the first place.ā€

Dude. Stop harvesting my data and just update my drivers already.

Fortunately it hasn’t forgotten my login in a few years at this point, but when it did, man was that annoying.
Still. Logging in to update drivers can gtfo of here.

You can always manually download drivers for free from the Nvidia website without GFE.

I find GFE to be a nice value add, for the updates, optimizations, streaming, etc. The cost of using my throwaway gmail account for mailing lists to authenticate GFE once in a while seems pretty low.

GFE is definitely nice but the login is balls. There’s a damn CAPTCHA (and an incredibly annoying one that) on the login, that’s what aggravates me the most. Especially since it periodically forgets my login, albeit not as often as before.

I also use a password manager, so every time it comes up I gotta go dig up my password, enter it, do the obnoxious CAPTCHA (at least twice, because CAPTCHA. Every picture with a bus? Well I can see a corner of a school bus in that photo, does that count or not?!), etc. I hate it.

While I get their value, some captchas are just hideously made. Like one that says choose squares with trucks and you’ve got things like the front of a bus in one and the tail of an F-150 in another and you don’t know what the person who made this had in mind.

Yeah, forgetting the login is obnoxious.

Mazel Tov!

3080 update:

Tried an undervolt/overclock - seems stable at 850 mV / 1845 MHz, which is decent. Didn’t push it higher. Huge efficiency gain over the defaults. Starting to wonder if there is a cooling problem rather than a silicon problem - either case airflow or a bad cooler on the card. Guess I should take the side off the PC and run everything stock to see what happens. Anyone ever run into a new GPU with bad cooling?

What temps are you getting again? This review mentions 38c at idle and 70c under load.

40 at idle (fans stopped) and 83 (throttle) under load.

Are you able to manually control GPU fan speeds? I am not familier with Palit card software.
