Best Buy is crushing it today. They dropped every card. I still say it’s by far the best way to get one online. They’re doing a great job stopping the scalping bots with their add to cart delay and this new policy of store pickup only.
You just have to be ready when the Discord bot notification hits.
Yeah, I had one in my cart, but we’re moving and closing on a house in two days, and I just can’t justify the finances right now. Hoping Best Buy keeps this up, though - it’s going exceptionally smoothly.
For anyone lurking or trying to order at Best Buy, keep in mind it’s not reserved until you click the checkout button. Also, be prepared for them to send you a verification code to your email. That may be another anti-bot measure, not sure.

This happened to me because I saw the 5800X Ryzen announcement. I got past the verification code, but then the local store that had inventory was no longer available.
Which is fine, because I don’t even want the 5800X, I’m holding out for a 5900X. And I’m not in a rush since I have a 3900X. It’s just instinctive and habitual to click in a mad frenzy due to a notification these days.
Yeah it’s possible the checkout reservation isn’t precisely true. Lots of people are getting to checkout without any store availability. That’s what I saw on my screen after I backed out of my checkout and tried again. You may still need to be in the initial wave.

It isn’t “reserved” until you successfully complete checkout. Trust me on this one.
That delay is solely used to help against bots, which it does not do.

My system is pretty old at this point. I upgraded to a core i7 6700k in Nov 2016 (geez it’s been that long?). I originally built it from scratch in 2010. At some point I upgraded to a gtx 970 and just recently to a used gtx 1070, which improved the graphics capabilities a little more than I expected for just a 1 generation difference.
Buying a new system at this point is out of the question unless my wife gets a dean position. I don’t think I’ve been CPU bound in most games, maybe a couple. I’d love to get a 3060 Ti and check out the ray tracing. I have a 1080 monitor.
So at this point in my system’s life, is upgrading the graphics card to a 3060 the best bang for the buck, or with the older CPU should I wait until I can afford a new system? Is building a system from scratch still the way to go, or is there a good off the shelf / customized build company that isn’t too expensive for the equivalent hardware?

Finally got 3060TI FE drop through Best Buy mobile app, pretty smooth experience, except store pick up only. My order says estimated pick up date 12/10, hopefully no issue with curb side pick up.
We can quibble pointlessly about whether the website’s plain wording that it is reserved is actually true or not behind the scenes.
However, hundreds of real people purchased cards at Best Buy today, so whatever they’re doing is working.
You may receive a pickup delay like I did. Don’t panic, just wait till the following week.

There is no need to quibble. I am correct. I successfully “reserved” a CPU and then it was removed from my cart, they didn’t let me checkout.
Also the website’s “plain wording” tells you to checkout as fast as you can, so it’s very clear that it isn’t actually reserved.
Yes. I went from 1070 to 2080S with a 6700K. All good at 3440x1440.
Correct. You misread both the website and my post. Here’s the text from Google:

Your cart was irrelevant. It would not have been reserved until you clicked the checkout button. Sorry you missed it.

No. I successfully clicked the checkout button, and it went to the checkout procedure, and then removed it from my cart.
That’s fair then. You didn’t post that in your original message prior to the edit. As I said, it’s quite possible the statement is not actually true behind the scenes.
In any case, Best Buy has by far the best luck with that compared to a poor website like Asus where it will drop you halfway through entering your payment information.

Yes, like I said at the start, there is no reservation until you complete checkout.
Also it looks like bestbuy is switching to in-store pickup only which is lovely in Covid times but probably another attempt to stop the scalpers.

Not sure if I’ll try to get a 3060 Ti yet, it may be a hard sell with the wife, but what do you guys use to see who has the cards in stock?

I use a bunch of discords and a separate script on Linux, but I recommend the Hotstock app. It notifies within 10 seconds of my own script. The various discords were a good 40-60 seconds slow.
Yes! Do you even read my posts, man? Haha!
I agree the Discords are too slow. My approach was to wait for the initial notification and then refresh the main product page to find other cards arriving in stock a few moments later. But again, hundreds of people in the BotRtx Discord today, so something is improving. Maybe Nvidia has a ton of 3060ti cards.

I saw some forum posts that stores had >100 3060ti cards in-stock for launch, so it doesn’t seem super supply-constrained like the RTX3080/5900X/5950X. Feels like it will probably be easier to get than the RTX3070. Not trivial, but nothing like the travails I’m going through.
Switching gears for a bit: after some more testing with fan profiles, I feel like I’m right on the edge of being temperature stable at 60-65% fan speed, which adds no noise to my existing PC. (I like a small bit of white noise in my room.) I think I might be a good candidate for undervolting. I need everything the same but like 5-10% cooler.
