People are still bidding up the 5900x almost $300 over MSRP on ebay.

:(

Most gamers don’t need the 5900X though, right? The new consoles don’t have that kind of CPU, and they should represent the new baseline for the next 5 or 6 years.

That depends on CPU what they currently have.

What I mean is, they could get the 5600X or the 5800X if they have a really old CPU, like I do.

Yeah, if you’re just doing gaming, you really don’t ā€œneedā€ the 5900X. It’s generally a bit better performer than the 5600X or 5800X, but most current and near-future games aren’t going to be CPU limited by those lower SKUs. This will certainly change over time, but one could save some money now and put it toward a newer, even faster architecture in the future when they’re starting to feel a little sluggish.

I am of the mindset for the extra $100 get the 5900x now. As I am prolly not gonna upgrade again for 3-4 years then.

I’m of the same mindset and I also have work I’ll use it for, although budget-wise I see the argument behind going lower now. Also, one could say putting the money towards a better GPU might give a better ROI except my current target is the 3080 or 6800XT and the next bump up from there is the absolutely ridiculously overpriced 3090 or the unreviewed and promised-to-be-exceedingly-low-stock 6900XT, so that doesn’t fit my build plans.

You mean 10-12 years, right?

Naw, longest I went was 7 years without an upgrade and I sorta missed the joy of building a new pc. So I am gonna keep the upgrade plan closer to 4 yrs going forward. I am nearing that age where I have less years ahead than behind. :P

Of course you don’t need 12 cores to game, the 5600X would work perfectly fine for at least 5 years. I just want it.

I went for the 5900X because I do a lot of second screen multitasking while gaming, and I figured I needed all the oomph I could get for Flight Simulator. But if a 5600X had become available at MSRP while I was stock hunting I would totally have got that instead.

I want the 5900X for glorious, glorious transcoding speed.

Oh that’s right. 5600X only has 6 cores, not 8 cores like the new consoles. I’d forgotten about that. Maybe that will be an issue eventually for certain games?

Seems plausible there’ll be a 5700 too when things have settled down.

Yeah, a 5700X with 8 cores would be the sweet spot theoretically, mixing future proofing of having 8 cores with presumably the best price.

I doubt that very much, but sure the 5800X would be a safer choice. It’s just much more expensive.

Right. The upgrade from 5800 to 5900 seems like a no-brainer. It’s the jump from 5600 to 5800 for 150 that (along with lower TDP) pushed me to the 5600. Not really the money that’s the issue, per se, but I tend to look for value over peak performance.

I managed to grab an Asus TUF 3060 Ti for $489 today. Not psyched about the price inflation over FE, but FE doesn’t vent well in my mini-ITX case, and the reviews seem quite positive for the 3060 Ti. I’m sure I’ll be very wowed by it after nearly a year on integrated graphics. I’m quite happy with my current 29" ultra wide that maxes at 75 Hz, or occasionally on a 1080p TV in the living room, so its a good fit for my planned usage, if not indefinitely future proofed.

And, the HotStocks app works! Highly recommended.

The other TUF cards have had great reviews.

Yup I saw that at the 3070 and 3080 tiers. Great quality and cooling it sounds like. Fits perfectly in the space I have. I’m quite excited!
