I’ve given up. The card I preordered back in December has been discontinued already, so I’ve been bumped onto another waitlist that is months away again. So I went for a prebuilt machine instead of a build my own this time round. Managed to snag the last ROG Strix G35CZ from Best Buy Canada, and it should be arriving tomorrow. I could probably take the 3080 out of it and make the cost of the entire machine back by selling it, but I won’t!

This is perhaps the cruelest part of PC building these days. Buying a mishmash of parts and putting them all together yourself is such a joy. Perhaps you should disassemble it when it arrives and put it back together?

I gave up too, though instead of rebuilding my PC I went for a new laptop instead. I had to settle for a 3060 to keep the price within the realms of sanity, but it’ll be a vast improvement on the 1060 I’ve had for the past few years and keep me going a while longer. If the desktop GPU insanity ever dies down, I may reconsider coming back to desktop land.

I’m gonna wait until this PC gives out or prices come down to something reasonable. My 1060 certainly can’t keep up with the latest games, but medium settings aren’t that bad and also, no lack of older / indie games to play.

I usually alternate between upgrading cpu/mb/ram and gpu, and all my stuff is so outdated that everything needs to be done so it is hard to choose which has priority. Reality seems to have decided for me when I get the urge.

Amen. Glass panels were a major marketing win and I’m glad many folks enjoy them, but it has made it difficult to find a current gen non-windowed case for those of us who prefer that option. Last time I looked, Microcenter had maybe two older ATX cases without glass.
