Ultimately it will be based on supply, both the 3080 and 3080ti are so incredibly inflated that the extra $400 on the bottom is largely negligible. But yes, if both were available at MSRP the 3080 is a vastly better value.

Apart from the official retail price being basically irrelevant in the current market, thereās a long tradition in computer hardware where the very high end costs 200% as much as the second-base version which is 90% as good. Weāre lucky that CPUs like the 5950x break this model actually, you really do get more cores which really are better if you have apps that use them. There were large stretches of time where the top-end CPU was just a bit faster and cost a lot more.
In the current market I think I also prefer the extra money going to NVIDIA and even to some extent Best Buy, at least instead of it going to a pure scalper and ebay fees. Ebay fees are 12% on GPUs, they must be making so much money in this shortage.
I have one of their liquid coolers and it works well and has caused no issues. Do I need it? No, but it came with the NXT BLD system I got a year and a half ago, so eh.

the xx80Ti cards have always been a cash grab. This is really about the 3090 being a dumb SKU which couldnāt decide what it was for (which GN called correctly). The 3080Ti replaces it as the ātop end card for gamers with more money than senseā.
Yeah, I just want something that doesnāt have itās performance degrade after a few years. I tend to keep my systems for a long time.
I do to, not because I want to but because they usually cost too damn much to replace :). Have to see how long the cooler lasts I guess.
980ti and 1080ti were more expensive, certainly, but great values in the end. The 2080ti was ridiculously expensive, but it did offer a substantial ~30% performance gain over the 2080. The 3080ti⦠doesnāt.
It got to the point where youāve got Youtubers recommending stuff from years ago:
6 years later and my 980ti is still doing me proud while I wait for sanity to return to the market.
So I just got selected in the Newegg Shuffle. EVGA 3070 FTW3 for $730. Worth it? Buying window ends in 2 hours.
They go for $1300 I think, so Iāll vote yes :)
Yeah, just checked Ebay. Gonna buy it then.
I was thinking of joining the queue for a 3070 Ti, guess this will be a fallback card.
Definitely, imho. Great card for 1080p & 1440p.
Buy it and then register with evga and step up to whatever card you want in the 3080 series, for the price difference and shipping costs.
Also you are the only person I know who has gotten picked in the shuffle.
Seriously. I have a dozen rejections already I think
Thatās to be expected when they only put up ~10 cards a day with thousands of people trying to win.
Appears the 3070ti is 5-7% better than a stock 3070 for $100 more. Nice Nvidia. :(
Nvidia binned all the GA102 and GA104 chips. Perfect GA102s are 3090s, decent GA102s are 3080s, good GA102s are now 3080tis. Similarly, great GA104s are 3070tis and 3080 mobiles, crappy GA104s are 3060tis, and decent GA104s are 3070s. This allows them to maximize revenue for each chipās bin.
It works out well for Nvidia to do it this way because Samsungās manufacturing process improves over time, and as time progresses more and more GA104s qualify as 3090s and 3080tis than 3080s, and Nvidia can charge more for them. And the same on the GA104 side of course.
So soon enough it will be difficult to find a 3070 or 3080 non-ti. Nvidia doesnāt want to sell them, if it can avoid that.
An NFL saying that seems appropriate: the best ability is availability
After reading about the Step Up program, this sounds like a really good idea. The $50 that Newegg charged me over MSRP for the 3070 would be applied towards the new card.
Still not wild about the power consumption of the 3080, but I could play around with underclocking/undervolting to mitigate that.
And Iām aware that I am a lucky SOB for getting picked. Shoulda bought a lottery ticket.
