Yeah, the “free (for manufacturers) FreeSync” beat out the (better performing but more costly) hardware-based G-Sync.

It’s Betamax vs. VHS all over again!

No, they were exclusive technologies. Freesync and gsync, as well as DLSS/FSR/XeSS, can all be run in the same monitor or game.

That said, FSR sucks and is no Freesync. XeSS may be good, I’m hopeful.

We are so boned

I am guessing the 4000 series will be delayed next year then?

The answer to that is… tricky.

FSR might be inferior to DLSS, but it works on my older hardware to give a little lift in some games that support it. That is a great boon for those that aren’t upgrading to overpriced cards anytime soon.

It’s a nice new option, it just isn’t remotely competitive with DLSS.

Just for grins I was poking around newegg.com and man, there are 3xxx series cards available, but the prices! Two grand for 3080s, $800 or 3060s, oh my.

I got my EVGA notification the other night! I think I had signed up a day or so after they announced their reservation queue system, which means they must really be getting cards out there.

It’s so gross. Even via the Newegg shuffle, a 3070 is going for close to 900 bucks, which back around 5-6 years ago you could almost build a whole gaming PC for, minus monitor.

I’m seriously considering just getting a Steam Deck and forgetting about new AAA games for a few years, at least until I manage to build a new PC to replace my aging one (i7-4770K, 1060 GPU).

I have a hard time justifying spending as much on a GPU as I used to spend on a whole system good enough for most games and work.

I don’t need a new GPU at the moment, I’m just worried that, luck being what it is, my current 2070 Super will crap out and leave me with no way to play any of the games I have.

Buying a pre-built system is the way to go right now. You can definitely get a 3080 and not totally break the bank but also be current on everything, which if Microsoft stands by their Windows 11 stuff, you might want to do.

In the interest of paying things forward: I also just got my EVGA notification, about a month after I bought a 3060 from the amazing and awesome to work with @KallDrexx . So I now have an (extra, unused, sitting unopened in a box) EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 XC GAMING, 12G-P5-3657-KR, 12GB GDDR6 video card.

Before I try to find a local buyer via the usual methods, is there anyone in the Qt3 community who is interested in buying this card for something approaching the retail cost? If so, PM me. I’m in the DC area and will give priority to local folks just to save on shipping, etc.

Isn’t this the use case for streaming?

Tempting, but I’m in Portland, way over on the other side of the country, and honestly given RL obligations wouldn’t get enough use out of it. Hope it goes to a good home!

Hadn’t thought of that. Think I’ll try nvidia’s streaming platform one of these days, see how it goes.

It is a great option, and works quite well if your game is supported. Biggest downside is mods, but that may not matter for many AAA games. I suspect xCloud or whatever Microsoft’s option is will be another way to go depending on what you’re after. Thanks to Alistair for the reminder, because I tend to forget this as an option as well.

Sub-1500 RX 6800 XT system, anyone? Or is raytracing just the bee’s knees and the wolf’s nipples?
