DLSS is the real bee’s knees.

I find raytracing rather… underwhelming. However, the performance of the card driving a G2 VR headset in DCS and Il2 is … how can I say this… fucking awesome.

RT reflections are just much better reflections. They can be compelling because they’re pervasive, everywhere. I remember playing Control there was a film projecting against the wall and I was taken by surprise seeing it reflecting in a ceiling tile, but usually they’re less impactful.
RT lighting, on the other hand, can be far superior. See the digital foundry metro exodus comparisons.

I think the difference with reflections are more tangible and way easier to put your finger on. The lighting improvements just look “better” without always being able to tell how or why. Comparison videos and highlights certainly help point out why. However, I didn’t need a comparison video to know that the reflections in Miles Morales were distractingly cool for me.

Yes, very much so. Reflections are obvious, while global illumination is more subtle-- but if you see an A/B comparison, remarkably more consistent and, well, real looking. It’s more than just shadows, it’s also light reflecting off non-shiny surfaces, diffusing their color in the room. It’s impressive stuff.
My understanding/perspective on it is we’re still a ways off having ‘full’ ray tracing in games. The only game I know that approaches it is Minecraft (maybe?) and the differences there are extreme. Reflections and shadows are the easiest/cheapest to do so, hey, lots of games just do that. This game has ray tracing! - Technically true, and a marketable statement to slap on the box to boot, however perhaps not a complete truth.
So most games coming out with ‘ray tracing’ are these weird hybrid things that have some ray tracing bits but are still relying on old (clever) rendering tricks for most of their scenes. Full lighting with a decent number of bounces is the holy grail here, currently though I think what’s coming out here are games with maybe one or two hand-picked light sources in a scene that will be fully ray traced with a small number of bounces and the others will be done in the cheaper raster method. It still looks better but we’re still some ways off every light source being ray traced.
Even when we get the power to do that there’s still going to be room for improvement. I’ve mentioned ‘bounces’, which is a configurable aspect of ray tracing, and makes a big difference in the realism of a scene. One or two bounces are obviously much cheaper than 10, but don’t look as good. If you’re unsure of what I mean here, imagine putting two mirrors facing each other and looking down the infinite hall of reflections that results. Two bounces means that in the mirror you’re facing you’d only see a single reflection in there. How many bounces can we see in reality before it becomes indistinguishable to the human eye? More than 10, certainly, but perhaps less than 100. We’re a long way from that level of fidelity.
All this to say, if you’ve found ray tracing underwhelming so far, we’re not actually there yet and, consequently, some current games do a much, much better job of showcasing it than others depending on what and how they’ve done it. In terms of a clear contrast before/after, Minecraft shows the best glimpse of the future.
I keep on entering the New Egg Shuffle crap multiple times a day. They have some decent prices (compared to Ebay) but man it seems like I might be better off playing scratch off tickets. ;) Has anyone actually ever succeeded?
I never did, and I’ve entered every single day it’s been run.
One guy I chat with on Overclockers Forums has won twice, but he also mentioned he spends a grand or so a year on their site. So…

I did win the shuffle once – but it was for a 3070 bundled with a motherboard and monitor, right after I’d purchased my 3080 and monitor. I almost bought it, then took a deep breath and backed away from the computer (and the $2000 price tag for the three components).
I know I could have flipped them, but man, I don’t want to be part of that economy.
I did, got an EVGA 3070 from the shuffle back in June. Posted about it upthread at the time. Ended up selling it though, as I got a 3070 Ti from EVGA’s queue shortly thereafter.
Still not working for me, weird
Strictly speaking it works but it leads me to “page not found “
Weird, well it showed most states having 1 store again only. So there are again dozen(s) of cards being released!
When in doubt load it on moar tabs!
One card per store? A drop in name only.
Let me rephrase it, one store per state will have a few dozen cards, looks like California is special and will have a few stores with stock. :)
A few dozen cards, our long national nightmare is over. :D
Around here in Portugal we’re starting to see GPU’s getting assigned for prebuilts, in case my current PC goes kaput I’ll probably go that route, though I’m a bit wary of it being a way to sell off stuff that people don’t want.
I’ll just post the PC gamer article I assume is about it:
