When to buy a DS

So I’ve been planning to buy a DS for a while, and then just before I was going to get it the SP came out with the brighter screen. I thought, huh, maybe I should wait until they upgrade the DS screen as well. Is this likely? I don’t suppose there’ll be another price drop when the new PSP pack arrives.

The DS screen is already really nice. If they do upgrade it, it definitely won’t be until next year, and possibly not even until this time next year. So buy one now.

Only real problem with the DS’s screen is the extremely restrictive view angles.

They’re only restrictive if you’re trying to sit next to someone and watch them play, which is pretty difficult. But if you’re actually playing the thing, the viewing angles are fine.

Sideways maybe, but the up/down range to avoid colors changing on you is ridiculous. Pretty much needs to be viewed at a perfectly perpendicular angle.

Nonsense. I’ve had no problems with color or any kind of viewing issues holding it at all kinds of angles.

I tried looking for the DS+Nintendogs bundle yesterday, but apparently it doesn’t ship until tomorrow.

Damn Castlevania driving another system purchase…

Charles, you take hyperbole to new levels of hyperbole.

Yes, because obviously I’m lying or exaggerating.

Maybe I have defective screens, but if I don’t view from the perpendicular, my screen becomes noticeably darker or lighter, depending on if it’s up/down.

I’ve not seen or ever heard of these weird screen tilting visibility issues. And I played Wario Ware Twisted on the thing!

Also, if you prefer your portables painted red, there will be a Mario Kart bundle package releasing next month.

You’re right, but the new GBA screen I was looking at at Target yesterday didn’t seem to be particularly different from the DS’s screens. LCD’s just have viewing angle issues.

Mine does too, but it’s fairly minor. Unless I try viewing from 60 degrees or so it doesn’t impact gameplay any, even in dark games like Castlevania. Hardly “extremely restrictive”.

I’ll have to give it a few tests to get some more exact numbers, but at around 30 degrees for me, dark colors become black.

Charles, ur a noob.

Anyway, I’d wait for the Mario Kart bundle, as you’re saving LOADS if you get it (well okay, so like $30…) But the DS will be RED! RED, people!

Just bought me a DS on eBay. I’d been spending a week trying to snipe at auctions and get one for $90 but the sweet spot for them seems to be around $110 or more. Finally found one today and got it for $90 plus $6 shipping.

Know the first game I’m going to buy? Nintendogs. Yes, Nintendogs. I’m a melancholy Japanese girl, apparently, but damnit it looks fun and Tom kept making me watch the commercials.

After that, maybe a little Advance Wars, some Castlevania, who knows. Beyond those two titles I’m actually going to make a concerted effort to buy games for this system that are really different than anything else you’d find on other systems, including the GBA or the PSP. That was the whole point, really.

Meteos, Kirby, and Trauma Center all fit that bill.

I was up until 2am last night playing Zelda: A Link to the Past (GBA) on my DS last night.

I check in and feed and water my Nintendog, but I’ve been doing all my hardcore gaming with the GBA games I got (before Zelda, Fire Emblem was an obsession.)

Don’t overlook the GBA games.

Phoenix Wright too.

Phoenix Wright too.

Phoenix Wright isn’t exactly completely different from anything on the GBA…
