I’d say I’m at a 90% success rate. TouchID second-generation was 100% unless my finger was wet.
Face ID has been pretty bumpy for me. I’m lazy so I lay down a lot and it suuuucks super hardcore in “laying down face” mode. TouchID was significantly more reliable for me in practice.
I do like Face ID in theory (zero user interface for the win) so I hope they fix it up.
For those having issues with Face ID, try turning off attention awareness for unlock. Glasses, bad lighting, etc., can make it hard for the phone to see your eyeballs.
Yeah, but then someone could break into my apartment and point the phone at my head to unlock it while I’m sleeping!

This was the exact usage scenario I was thinking it would suck for as I lay surfing Safari at night with Face ID not yet enabled.

I am the opposite. Face ID has been brilliant and it always works whereas TouchID failed enough I found it pretty annoying.
Well, it did fail that one time I had half a cookie sticking out of my mouth.
I don’t know, I normally wear glasses, but I can wake up in the middle of the night, look at my phone in complete darkness without my glasses, and it works every time. It works after I shaved, or when I haven’t shaved in a week. The only time it doesn’t work is at weird angles or far away.
It’s odd because some people have no issues with it, and others have constant problems. Doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.
The attention awareness isn’t about the system not recognizing you with and without glasses. It can train for that. Rather, if attention awareness is on and you have glasses that cause a reflection, it can’t detect your eyeballs. That’s why turning that off can often help for people who are having Face ID issues.
