White House slowing Katrina inquiry, senators say

The White House is crippling a Senate inquiry into the government’s sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina by barring administration officials from answering questions and failing to hand over documents, senators leading the investigation said Tuesday.

In some cases, staff at the White House and other federal agencies have refused to be interviewed by congressional investigators, said the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. In addition, agency officials won’t answer seemingly innocuous questions about times and dates of meetings and telephone calls with the White House, the senators said.

Did anyone not see this one coming? Anyone at all?

How do we make this administration’s eternal damnation by future historians come faster?

It’s surely for our safety, if this info leaked to hurricanes the world over, they’d know how to get past our amazing defenses and KILL AMERICANS!

No, not really. Probably the most predictable outrage of the last few years. Which doesn’t make it any less outrageous, really, but what are you going to do? My hope is that the legislature–on both sides of the aisle–will grow some balls over this issue. It’s an election year, and I’m sure the Democrats would love to have “Senate Republicans are letting the White House sweep Katrina under the rug” as a campaign issue. The Republicans need some good press these days, not another scandal.

A third will hear them, the ones who already know. All others are deaf.

Yeah. Why even bother trying?
