Dude, that’s low, even regarding Bahimiron.
I laughed so hard at this I had a coughing fit.
I’ve been tempted for the longest time to ask Tom to change my username to Microsoft or Sony, just so that when someone posts one of those wailing-to-the-gods posts about Microsoft screwing them out of a buck, I can post ‘Hey, you forgot the dollar signs in my name!’ or as Sony, ‘Hey, I’m doing the best I can!’ Not that Tom would go along with such a thing but it would amuse me to no end.
I lurked for years before I signed up, and I enjoy trawling the archives from time to time when it’s a slow day at work. It certainly feels warmer and cuddlier now, whatever that’s worth, but I agree that it’s cyclical. I also think you want a little bit of controversy, to spice things up. If everyone is too civil, if everything is relentlessly earnest, it’s relentlessly fucking dull. If everyone is too absorbed in disappearing in a useless haze of illiteracy and memes and ill-conceived snark, then it’s just everywhere else on the internet. If you get a mix, leaven it with a bit of intelligence and the ability to string a sentence together*, occasionally brilliantly, it’s Qt3. Works for me.
*Mostly.
Come on ladies. Let’s hug it out.
I’ve only been here a couple of years, so I don’t have the long perspective some of you do. But to me Qt3 always has been a place where really smart people hang out. Sometimes that intelligence manifests itself as unnecessarily mean snark as posters try to out-clever each other. I’ve certainly taken part in my share of such activity.
Any time you put a bunch of smart* people together who likely will never meet in person, you’re going to get a certain amount of asshole behavior. If you want nice, there are lots of nicer but less interesting online places to be.**
- mostly
** I run one of those places and spend more time here
I once told my wife the board was like hanging out in a frathouse at MIT.
I’ve been reading for quite a while. Seems about the same to me - I’m no more afraid to post my opinions now than I was when I joined.
LURK MOAR NOOB
Not a midwest thing unless New York counts as the midwest.
Also the Extarbags = Bahimiron comment had me dying of laughter.
How do you do that? How the fuck do you hang around a website for almost 6 years without saying more than 5 things? That’s dedication, though to what I have no idea.
I’m still giggling at that one. I think I need to see a doctor if it doesn’t stop soon…
Relax, Adree. You’re a sweetie too!
Some people have no desire to post and just enjoy reading the mad postings of others. The membership is to keep track of posts read and so on. There is nothing wrong with that.
I had an account for at least a year or two before I said anything, in part because I was afraid that people whom I respect would call me names and make me feel bad. It wasn’t yet activated for posting because Tom is a person I respect, but it existed, anyway.
The trick is to just lose respect for everyone.
Yeah, yeah, that’s good. That’s ok, it’s ok. Now smell her a little.
Not saying there is anything wrong with it, it just blows my mind.
I think I was unactivated for like 3-4 months because I didn’t know how I had to be activated. I remember reading the rules again to see if he set up a mandatory downtime for new accounts and reading “Email me to get activated!” and I facepalmed.
A very pleasant email conversation with Tom ensued. Actually, all of my emails conversations with Tom have been very pleasant. PM conversations not so much, but Email has always been nice. He even called me one of the guys one time! Swoon
