What is it about 1st person shooters like Counterstrike, DoD, and BF1942 that attracts so many illiterate brats ? It’s so hard to go online in these games now and find people who actually want to work together as a team.
Is there some sort of hardwiring at a certain age where you have to be a complete moronic prick and abuse everyone online ? I have to say BF1942/Desert Combat is the worst for this type of player at this time.
It’s not just FPSs (FPSi?) - try playing Warcraft or Diablo.
Lack of accountability’s gotta be a big part of it. These kids didn’t grow up in fear of being knifed over a game of Street Fighter 2 in a downtown arcade like we did (by “we” I mean kids in Toronto :) )
That was another nice thing about PlanetSide. The need for a credit card (or mom’s card) and someone willing to cough up $13 a month kept most of the annoying-ass kids at bay.
Those people are the reason I left the Counter-Strike community after Beta 7.
It helped that the developers were kowtowing, not to the fans who played the game in the beginning, and helped spread the word and lead to its explosion, but those deathmatchers that came in later and thought, “This game would be really cool with Akimbo guns and K9 units.”
Since were talking online shooters… does DoD still have the ungodly K98 players? you know, the ones that one shot kill like it was a Quake RL? I almost imagine them Rocket Jumping. They gotta fix that.
You have to try out servers and find a group of them that offer good play. It takes a while, but a list of good servers is important to have.
I’ll vouch for that, though my ping (relatively) blows there. A few others worth checking out:
Third Infantry Division: They are currently serverless, but they should be online again soon. See http://www.3rd-infantry-division.net/ It is a good place to play if you like the Axis, since they prefer to play on the Allied side. Don’t be too happy about that, though. Their fearsome use of the Garand was what inspired me to practice with it.
Buxom Bombshells: http://www.buxombombshells.com 209.144.211.229:27015 Their server is difficult to get on because of the team play and good administration.
Spies: Crowbars of Justice: 216.148.60.3:27020 There are a few very good players and admins that are regulars. Another difficult server to join due to popularity.
The Second Rangers (-=2dRgr=-) can be good if some of them are around to admin: 64.235.227.9:27015 and 65.125.236.74:27015
Last but not least, the Crusty old Fossil Rocker server: [CoFR]FRX Battle of the Bulge - 66.250.220.229:27017 All CoFR have admin authority, and it is like a race to ban smacktards when needed. Me! Ooh! Me! Dang, beat me to it!
If you want CS (shudder), try here:
[CoFR]FR6 West Coast-FF On 66.54.88.65:27015 (This server is in LA, and I get an awesome sub-30 ping to it.)
FoCA Pizza and Beer Server - 66.208.104.200:27015
Perhaps its the fact that it is now essentially popular culture, and at a risk of being presumptuous, whereas many of us have been kicking around since these games, if not online gaming itself started and hence at least remember the concept of at least publicly stating “pld” to the guy that just shot you, even if you are actually screaming at the monitor at the injustice of it all.
Most importantly, the vast majority of FPS titles are free to play on the net. You can badger daddy until he buys you CS and then use his PC and net connection to get online (assuming you didnt get a PC instead of a playstation for christmas). Sadly a lot of them seem to expect the single player experience where the game revolves around them, they get to win and save the day every game.
Added to that is the anonymity factor and untouchability that comes with online gaming. I “spoil” your fun by beating you, you just call me cnut, cheater etc and unless I happen to be admin on the server, there is little I can do, I certainly cant hang you from a clothes peg by your underpants or flush your head down the bog like some of these toerags deserve.
What I find troubling is that Online gaming generally, at least in many of the titles that I play is tending to go the same way. If something doesnt happen that fits in with your expectations, then you whine and bitch about it. Whether its the CS “aimbot” or the ever more frequent screams of “griefer” in the subscription MMOPRG etc.
Whether its down to general immaturity of the vast majority of gamers now (the <20’s especially) or its just them progressing from the single player experience many of the current teens are doing coupled with the explosion of broadband services and no intelligence require ISP services like AOL, who can say?
I used to run a CS server just when CS first exploded onto the scene. Based on that and recent experience, if you want to play something like CS (dont play BF1942 online so no idea if it follows a similar pattern) is play on clan servers rather than public servers. We rigourously enforced a no swearing policy just by kicking repeat offenders typing/voice com’in the “big five”. Pretty hard to be too offensive when you cant swear like a trooper, at the very least you have to be creative.
If you like DoD you might want to try some Vietcong online… some of the better servers are UK and they’re still playable. Plus some of the huge 40+ player battles on these VC servers are total war…and people actually use teamwork… especially the VC players for some reason… must be the Europeans. hehe.
Yes, though you can learn to deal with them. Most of the official maps allow enough cover to avoid them, but they will dominate long streets and large plazas.
The Americans don’t really have a counter right now, as the 1.0 release broke the way hitboxes work with the Garand. Most Garand “hits” will instead be counted misses or non-fatal limb hits. The devs swear up & down that this is fixed in the 1.1 patch (releasing in a couple weeks, hopefully). The best counter the Americans have is the Thompson (especially if you are good at headshots with it) or the BAR (recoil is heavy, so much practice is required). A good sniper goes a long way, too.
The 1.1 patch is also supposed to reduce the accuracy of the Kar98 a bit so that it no longer will outshoot a sniper rifle at long range.
The British team gets the Lee-Enfield, which uses the same code as the Kar98, but also has 10 rounds in the magazine. It was fun to listen to the Kar Whores whine about the L-E when it came on the scene - they didn’t like to have opponents with equal firepower.
Heh, we’re not immune to it, trust me. I used to play on Dutch and Scandinavian servers at one point simply because I would have no idea if they were question my parentage (or worse) or not.

Well if they were to balance the game on realism… all 3 guns are pretty much the same damage wise… heavy bullet rifles, or they can have a Springfield non scoped version like the Enfield/K98. The Garand overall would be the best because… well its semi auto and its American! God Bless Us!
Was watching some documentary on discovery where the garand came up and its “ping” when it empties. Apparently bad guys used to listen for the ping and then rush when they heard it knowing that the GI was empty and trying to reload. GIs to counter this used to carry empty clips with them which they would throw on the ground to make the “ping”. bad guys then run into a fully loaded Garand.
Working with a team mate it is possible to work something similar in DoD. One of you takes a Garand, the other a Bar or Thompson. Garand fires first, the sub stays just round the corner (or out of sight at any rate). Habitual German players listen for the ping and rush so you duck round the corner to reload behind your mate and they run into your loaded team mate instead of you. Works a treat.
All you have to do it find someone to help you with that plan… over here (oz) there’s only one real set of servers worth playing on (it’s full of pretty good players - Aussies, it’s GA).
I beleive that ALL online games are filling up with “n00bs” and kiddies… ( the reason I left CS in beta 6 was that) … I now play Natural Selection 2.0 witch isn’t too bad (until you make the mistake of not putting a turret on the right spot and some guy whines about how YOU lost the match for the ENTIRE team for the next 50 minutes … eggh)
I don’t play many games online because of these people, and I’m pretty unsociable when i do play… I don’t talk unless i already know the person, or if it’s something to do with the teamplay of the game…
(I like the example I saw in a Penny Arcade comic once, something about “if you want to chat go to IRC” ) …
I guess I should just get over it, as I’m letting myself be pushed out of great games by little kids… (then again, I do have study to do)
