Windows 10 will not update

I apologize for suggesting something you’ve likely already done, but just in case:

  • sfc /scannow from an elevated prompt
  • disable your AV
  • try again

No problems, looking for things to try,

I have indeed tried those things, only AV I’m running is Defender which shouldn’t be an issue (and I don’t see a way to shut it down anyway - I did turn off the firewall.)

What is really discouraging is that I tried running a clean boot with nothing in Startup running, and shut down all non-MS services. Still the same problem. I’ve uninstalled my nVidia video card. I’ve uninstalled the wireless card (after update downloads were downloaded.) I’ve tried an install from a USB stick using Media Creation.

And what really drives me bonkers - I actually somehow got it to run fully and complete last time an update came out (see earlier in the thread) but doing exactly what I did that last time that worked, now doesn’t work. It even kicks the error out at the exact same 45% as before.

You can give this a shot, but it sounds like the windows update download part works fine, and the updates themselves are failing. But worth a shot.

Do you ever think maybe your drive is going bad? It’s just so weird and intermittent.

After reading all that you have done and searching for answers the only things I keep coming up with is hardware failure or some recently installed software that’s preventing your update. Since this was a couple of months ago did you install any new software? Also you mentioned that you had this problem with the previous update but did some things and got it to work. That leads me to believe that you might have a hardware problem. As Tim mentioned above have you considered that your drive is going bad?

Thirding hardware.

Jeff, I think your issue stems around this part, but it’s just a guess based on the repeat of the same thing, you clearing off space prior to the last one working, etc.

If possible, in your run bar, paste this into windows search:
%windir%\Windowsupdate.log

Scroll to the bottom of that and see if there is any additional info on the failure. Note that it is not just a failure log, it is a running log of what it’s doing during the update, so you should be able to see what point it is getting stuck on.

Yeah, it’s a good thought. I did run some health scans on my hard drive, and everything I’ve run indicates no problems. When I do a google search on this, there are a LOT of people with the exact same problem, with it hitting 45% on the reboots and then stopping and spitting out the same error. The “fixes” are different, however, and usually involve some driver of some video card or wireless card or something similar. However, only about 10% of the reports I find end up with a resolution - most of the people do everything the MS techs ask, including sending in their logs, and nothing works.

This is why I’ve tried uninstalling my video card (on a laptop, old nVidia GTX 680m) and my wireless card and disabling anything I can find in device manager that seems un-needed. Also why I’ve tried this with a clean boot (no startup items.)

@Skipper, I’ll try the command when I get home from work, thanks.

No worries, JeffL. Good luck. The reason why I think it might be space related is that Windows 10 by default will manage the swap space for memory<->hard drive temp swap. And the lower amount of memory you have, the more space it will hold there. For more information on what I’m talking about, search Windows 10 minimize paging file.

I don’t think you should permanently change your paging file size, but I think out of that 36GB you have to factor in the paging file size, the size of the update downloaded, the amount of space needed to extract that download and run it, etc.

If you have a second drive, you could get back a little on your OS partition by uninstalling a program on the OS drive (if under that drive) and reinstalling it but choosing the install location as the second drive. Etc …

You can also search for and run Disk Cleanup under windows search.

I tried Skippers suggestion and found that I needed to open the powershell, then type ‘WindowsUpdateLog’ into the command line. This generated the WindowsUpdate.log and placed it on my desktop. I then opened it using Notepad++ and looked at what was in there. You can also open it in notepad.

To give an example of a hardware failure, I have a 4 year old HP desktop with integrated graphics. It was working fine and gave absolutely no indication that there was something wrong. One moment it was working fine, then a bzzzzt happened and the screen froze and had to reboot. It worked for about a minute and it went bzzzzt again and froze. This time when I rebooted the monitor never got a signal. I tried a different monitor that I knew worked and still no signal. Conclusion; integrated graphics chip blew. There was no warning everything work like it was supposed to then bzzzzt nothing.

As to Skippers suggestion about freeing up more drive space, if you disable hibernate and delete the file that windows creates for it you can free up 20 -30 gig if I recall correctly. Can’t remember how to do this, its been a long time ago (was using a 128 gig ssd at the time and was running out of space).

Edit: Just checked on hibernate and the file it creates is around 75% of your installed ram. So 8 gig of ram will have a 6 gig file. I have had 32 gig of ram ever since I went to 64 bit os and I saved around 24 gig when I disabled hibernate.

I got this log and I’ll be darned if I can figure anything out from it.

Can you copy the last 20 or so lines posted in it?

OK, it just tried again, got the same error, rolled back, and as soon as I logged in I got a message that Windows needs to update and is downloading the updates etc,

Here are last lines, Note one of them is repeated about 20 or more times in a row so I’ve deleted the repeats:

Strange questions here, Jeff. Do you have a VPN installed? Tell me about your antivirus and antimalware?
And one additional question, is this now or has it ever been a work laptop located on a company network?

You can search on that specific segment I clipped, it sure sounds like it’s trying over and over to get part of an update. It eventually marks them okay because, at least for some of this, “were already downloaded and are valid.” In other cases, “Dynamic download data fetcher for *** does not exist.” or, " is not allowed to download due to service regulation."

About the only thing I can see is that it is that it thinks the update is ready to install, or enough of it is and it begins. I think it is failing because it is NOT fully downloaded and/or valid.

Nearly every Microsoft Technet article on some of those messages steps through some command line stuff to attempt to fix it. If you’re up for that level of work, let me know. But it would just be a shot in the dark to try to reset the process.

Here is an example:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/1c0f9bc4-0040-48e7-b008-6bc54d86c7d0/update-is-not-allowed-to-download-due-to-regulation-msg-in-windowsupdatelog-file?forum=winserverwsus

I’ve tried everything else, so no problem trying more things. There are a LOT of “I get to 45% and it stops and spits out the Windows could not configure one or more… etc.” error posts out there, and I’ve tried everything MS tells people to try, short of just doing a complete fresh new Windows install without saving data and apps (and since i tried the install from a USB drive with the Media Creation tool iso, I suspect even a fresh install would fail.)

Only other virus checker was Malwarebytes but I’ve uninstalled that. Just Defender. No VPN installed. I went into the startup and even went into Add/remove programs and removed everything I don’t use or didn’t really know what it was. Never part of a work system, this is my personal laptop. Never had a problem with updates over the 5 or 6 years I’ve owned it, until 1709.

Various people pointed to some kind of driver issue, but I’ve disabled or uninstall just about everything at one point or another trying to fix this. What’s infuriating is as soon as it goes through the 15 or 20 minutes of trying to download install and reboot/restart, only to fail and then roll back, as soon as it reboots a new Windows needs to update message will come back. It won’t give up trying.

I’m assuming anything else you download happens normally, so you’re getting to the point that is isn’t your connection, your (now unloaded) drivers, your (mostly removed) programs, etc. It’s your load of windows. Something has gone screwy.

My questions above were along the lines of seeing if there could be a network issue causing the downloads to corrupt or fail. There is still one item you can do, and that’s plug in (if not) or go wireless (if not) and repeat the download and install just to check the final piece, which is the actual connection to your network. After that, you’re left with a reinstall or OS repair, as much of a pain as that is.

I’m sorry there isn’t an easy answer, Jeff. Stuff like this drives me insane if it happens to me.

I have not plugged directly in to the router, so I’ll try that next. Running out of things to try! Must be someone’s way of telling me to replace my notebook. But even then it will drive me crazy until I figure this out.

It can’t drive you crazy if you smash it with a sledge hammer.

I wish I had a solution for you since I know how maddening these kinds of problems can be.

I’d actually call MS. Despite not having a service contract they might well be happy to help.

I’ve talked to them online. They offer the same suggestions that they do in their forums (there are a LOT of people with update problems just like this, including stopping at 45% and giving the same error.) I’ve tried what they suggest (same handful of things, and it doesn’t appear those work for anyone) and they ultimately say just do a clean new install of Windows wiping out apps and files. When I ask them how that is different from the ISO install I tried with the option to keep my files and apps, they respond with “that’s all we have left to suggest.”
